Excellent info.
Does it rub on any of the lines. It looks like the rack is mounted inside the rubber insert so even if it wasn't touching, I am thinking the lines could still rub under aggressive driving. How close is it if not touching at rest?
Maybe a little grinding would help. Even if it isn't as strong, it would still add some rigidity over nothing.
Thanks.

So what is the official name for this part for the 964?
Steering rack stiffener? Steering rack brace? Something else?
Who sells them?

I will double check the TSB's but I recall there being other concerns. The 94 turbo nor the 3.8RS/RSR use this stiffener and use the 18" speedlines so although that might help for some concerns I don't think this is the answer to what the factory was addressing with the n/a 964's.

I may have spoken too soon when I said "no problems". We found a failed rear hub yesterday; complete write up on Pelican Parts. Whether this is due to 18" wheels or not is open to speculation.
