Dave - get the new number plates made & have them fitted for the MOT. Then once you've passed it, fit your old ones again! Sorted.

Andy - about to move to France and they don't do personal plates AFIK.

The thought had never crossed my mind.

Suppose I may as well do the lot and get some legal ones for the Supra as well.

I jacked the car up this morning and removed the rear wheel - but I couldn't take a photo of my "very serious leak" because I couldn't actually find any evidence of one. The brake pipes were all bone dry.

I've just been to the MOT centre and am going back at 4.30 so that they can show me where the leak is.

I took it back, and they showed me where the leak was (the braided hose runs from the caliper to a bracket, and there is a union there which is apparently where it leaks). Although - it did seem rather dry this afternoon as well.

He did move the hose about a bit and did manage to get the slightest trace of moisture on his finger - but whether that is genuinely brake fluid or not remains to be seen. He said that yesterday, there was an actual drop of brake fluid around that union.

I am still somewhat dubious. The car is still booked in for work on Tuesday. Over the weekend, I will remove the wheel again and have a very good look including much pumping of the brake pedal. If I can confirm a leak, then I'm happy they found it. If I can't - I will be cancelling the booking on Tuesday and taking my car somewhere else for it's MOT.

Well, I checked again this morning - wheel off, car jacked. The guy opposite me is a mechanic / deals in cars and although I wouldn't trust him to service mine I also had him come over to take a look while I was pumping the brake pedal. Result : no leak. He also had the same opinion as me that steel hoses rarely leak and certainly not when they are just 5 years old.

I've cancelled the booking on Tuesday to fix my "very serious leak" and am now booked elsewhere on Wednesday for another MOT attempt. And I won't ever be going back there. I'm pretty confident that my very serious leak was in fact rain water.
