Question What does this do??

Part number 964 641 330 00, listed in PET as 'central indicator' control unit, but that doesn't mean much to me....

Not entirely sure, i gather it controls a lot of the indicator and warning light systems for the VDO gauges. Cabling going to it can be a bit fragile so I would not recommend doing anything with it unless you are sure any faults don't lie elsewhere.

I thought mine was playing up when it got extremely hot but it turned out to be a broken air vent next to it.

That's interesting Stevepaa, that link you sent shows exactly the same one I bought in the uk from that seller? I bid in error thinking that it was the ECU going cheap then realised it was the wrong part number...... doh.

so for my £15 I've got an interesting looking Porshce bookend.. perhaps I should bid on the identical (even down to the torn sticker!) one and complete the set...

Blown Away, is it somewhere under the dash then?... haven't had a chance to look yet.

Sure is, - In right hand drive sits between ignition and side vent below the dash.

I'm reviving this thread as a form of trouble shooting.

Can I unplug this central indicator control unit and start the car without it plugged in?

I have an issue where my Fuse 18 to the gauges blows immediately and I want to eliminate this as a problem.
