I looked into this a bit and it seems the jury is out or slightly not in favor of this mod. There are RSA owners looking to add power steering back and owners without power steering complaining about how hard the car is to drive at slow speeds ~30mph for long duration on canyon roads. My personal decision is to keep my PS since feel in these cars is already orders above the more modern cars. I’d be careful comparing a 348 to our cars. Very different beast. With some easy upgrades like tie rods and rack bushings, consensus seems you can get great steering feel and responsiveness quite easily.

Default Power steering option

Read with interest and noted that in the end you said that folks were not interested or looking to covert from manual to power steering.
i got tired of the rear power steering pump leaks and issues also HP drain to drive pump. I installed an electrical pump from a Mazda ( forgive me), removed the rear manual pump and lines. Installed electrical pump in front, ran short Aeroquip lines to PS unit, connected power and had power steering. The electrical pump used was not as strong as the OEM pump and requires a little more effort in steering, but a lot less than manual. I like the feel as it seems to provide more steering feel/feedback.
think whole change over cost me around $300. FYI for what is worth.

Having very recently driven an 84 911 in the canyons with stock wheels/tires I would very much agree with above. While the feedback and additional feel was a revelation the effort in the canyons was very high, enough so that I wouldn’t want larger wheels/tires to wrestle with at speed. That leads right into why it doesn’t make sense on a 964, most everyone runs wider wheels/tires and that in combination with manual rack would be a HIIT workout in the canyons. The larger tires definitely increase traction and improve handling and having the power rack allows them to be manageable. Focus on the bushings, tie rods and other bits that soften up the stock front end instead.

this seems like a cool option. I’m all about cleaning up the engine bay and eliminating problem sources. Do you have a Mazda part number?

re: the HIIT workout, might be a very effective way to kill 2 birds w 1 stone!

I LIKE the power steering on the 964. it's just 'enough' power and has really good feel to it.

I could have removed but opted for a cup car electric pump... got a deal on it, or would have used some other electric pump mercedes, mazda, honda, whatever...

That is really cheap compared to what they normally go for. Have you received yours yet?

Will you being doing this mod. yourself? If so, any chance of putting up a step by step guide? Would love to hear more on this modification.
