996 = great daily driver thats as much fun as you make it be. Cheaper to own and alot easier maintenance. Get a 2002 + and you will have the updates and bigger motor. RMS has pretty much become a non issue from what I have read with the new design part and less $$ then a valve adjustment if you do need it done.
The downside of a 2002+ model is the speed of depreciation which quickly wipes out maintenance costs. I do quite fancy a 996 as a daily driver (keeping the 964) but the horror stories about them do scare me a bit, and there is no danger of me buying a car that will lose £10-15k in a couple of years.

I tried, and tried to like the 996. Drove like a Mazda and looked like one on the inside.
Ok thats harsh but its hard to put the 964 and 996 in the same sentence. They seem mutually exclusive.

If you like one- could you the other? I couldn't. YMMV.

p.s. That said my next car will be a GT3.

Bob: why don't you sell the 964 and add the money to the 996 budget? I would be much more satisfied with (1) GT3 than (2) 964 + 996.

Thanks for the input everyone...

I will drive a few more cars and will try a 2002 + with the 3.6..
A GT3 would be great as I do a Track Event every chance I get.

I would agree that the 964 is a totally different car and I do love the classic looks and it is a blast to drive.

One concern I have with it is someday I will need to rebuild the motor, not that anything is wrong with it today but the cost is getting very very high for a rebuild. 15k to do it right.
