I have 3 sets of wheel caps and I'm trying to decide which is most "accurate" for my 1992 C2 with a US Cup flair... I've seen all 3 of these on various 964 products - both painted sets came off 964 OEM Cup 1 wheel sets and the non-painted was a "find" that looks just like the caps I see on US Cup cars.
The two painted look very similar but are quite different, especially at the top "P O R S C H E". The imprint in the middle set is very deep. All 3 are alloy...
Thoughts?
Also, anyone have a feel for value of each set?

I'll probably need 2 sets. One for my track set of wheels and the other for my street set of Cup 1s. Non-painted for Track sounds right, then which painted set for street.

On a purely historical note, the caps with the gold "P O R S C H E" are the most accurate. The black version didn't come into use until late 1993 on the last of the 964 production and has remained the same through to the current production line.

PS - I agree that NO caps has got to be the winner for a track car.

Dave - thanks so much for the info. That now makes perfect sense to me. Both caps came off 964 Cup 1s, so I was very curious as to the difference in styles. The Gold PORSCHE came off my 1992 C2 and the Black PORSCHE off a late 1993 production RSAmerica.

Just to continue the story, you'll find that the same is true of the bonnet badge - Gold up to 1993 and Black thereafter. The curious thing is that I can't find anybody to admit to knowing why the change was made. I was envisaging some story akin to the change from red to black for the Rolls-Royce badge (the death of Royce I believe) but there seems no similar tale for Porsche. Maybe it's just a marketing thing.

I have gold on my 1993 964- my window sticker says the rim caps were an option at $214. The 17 inch wheels were $1,378.
My car had very low mileage on it when I bought it, so I believe these to be the original caps. I was actually thinking of changing them as they are a little faded, but only want to have the "correct" caps to keep it stock...

Andrew,
I suspect the gold caps ARE correct in your case. The change-over to black came at some time during 1993 - perhaps, even, for the 1994 model year (from August 1993).
Many suppliers are not aware of the change so you can often get supplied the "wrong" ones through their ignorance.

I thought the standard caps were silver with the entirely black Porsche shield ( i.e. the shield relief is silver and the base is black ), or entirely silver, as per all the marketing pics. from the then current brochures. I have the silver and black on mine by can't find a good pic at the moment.
