Could be that he's fouled his intake manifold. The oil breather pipe can push oil into the intakes if you overfill. I've done this. I removed the intakes and cleaned them. There was a puddle of oil inside the resonance flap tube.

I've read where other's have had smoke on an over fill.

What color is the smoke?

I'd say clean the ISV and see if you can get it running smoothly. Check the level and get it down to mid-way on the stick. It may take a while for the smoking to stop.

Hopefully other smarter folks will chime in, too.

Best of luck,
Dave

Did you start the oil change when the oil was HOT? If it was cold, I'm not sure that the thermostat opened and you drained the oil out of the cooler. This could account for the extra oil.

Also,(just a guess) if too much oil burns in the engine, couldn't it foul the O2 sensor and trip the CEL?

My guess , you put enough oil into the tank to overflow the tank .
The oil that goes into the tank when the motor is not running , stays in the tank .
You can fill up the tank to the point where the vent tube connects .

Maybe the oil got into the intake and then onto the O2 sensor .
If smoke is coming out the exhaust pipe , thats a real good clue .
If thats the case , I might start up the car and let it run for awhile .
The airflow and the heat might just do the trick .

Smoke is thick and white like the clouds. I think a good cleaning and a hard run will burn off all of the excess. I did the oil change hot..ouch!!
I really appreciate all of the positive feedback from everyone on my first post. All the books in the world cant stack up to individual experiences.

Thanks,
Rob

The vast majority I've had CEL's, it been because of a bad 02 sensor, FWIW.
Keep us posted!!
Once this is behind you:
Let us know why your pulling the engine this summer (weeping 964's are a badge of honor IMHO!!). At any rate, not worth the $$ to fix unless you're in there for another reason, again IMHO.
Post some pictures!! Let us know any/all modifications you have done/planning to do.

Bet they really frown on that in CA!! Here in the south, it's kind of expected...pick-up truck blowing smoke with a gun rack

I was in honolulu when that happened .
Corner of McCully and Kapiolani , turning right .
Seeing a huge cloud of smoke come out of the car is somewhat memorable .

Well, I pulled the ISV. They put it in a nice handy spot(Thanks Ferry P.)... Wasnt too dirty but cleaned it anyway. I got the oil to where I want it about 3/4 to the second dipstick notch (about 1 o'clock on the gauge) I do believe the plugs are fouled causing loss of power or misfire. The smoke is gone though. Its still not starting on the first two key turns and on the third it trips the CEL and starts. I took it out and tried to have a spirited drive but it took too much to feather the pedal. It ran better when it was warmed up but still ran like the plugs are boogered up. I am going to swap new plugs (all 12)...what brand is best? Im sure I will get a few different ones like Blondes or Brunettes but I will choose.

"what brand is best?"
The ones you have now .
I'd pull the top six and clean them up real good and put them back in , myself .
Just cause they might be oiled up isn't a reason for replacement .

While the top plugs are out , I'd do a compression test .

Sparkplugs , sparkplus and more sparkplugs...

Any chance the smoke is what caused the CEL to come on? You think you might have fouled the 02 sensor? I wonder if you can take it out and clean/replace it?

Can't you check for a code (CEL should set a code) and know for sure what's causing your problem? Most shops will do this for a one-hour labor charge; i've had a shop do it for free if you use them for other work. Also, i think there's a way to check for codes without having to resort to the Porsche Hammer.
