I'd also like to know how to get the carrier off the car. Is it possible without removing the engine?

Yes, it is possible.
You must remove rear bumper, put jack or something under engine, that it can not dropped.
Then remove rear exhaust, heating tube, rear engine tin.
Now is time to release engine mounts and nuts by engine carrier.
Its released now.

That's a lot of work. I was hoping it would be easier. Any way to add the Rennlist gusset and weld in place? Probably not but I thiought I would ask.

I did not take the bumper off. I had to "work" the engine carrier and brace a bit to get them to fit together well. Then there's a whole bunch of welding after that to make sure I never ran into a problem. To make it look nice it was media blasted and powder coated. You would need to at least paint it to protect where the welded areas.
