Steve, assuming you have standard brakes then you have the small 2 pot calipers on the back. The pads for these are totally different to the front pads. Here's what the 2 pot calipers look like and the pads:

Yes, that should be correct. I have a later 964 with the four pot rear calipers and my front and rear pads are interchangeable. Makes it very convenient to move the front pads to the rear when they get below 50% and replace the fronts with new ones.

If the rears are the smaller caliper, no you cannot swap the pads front to rear. If they are the later larger ones, then you can.

So...have you found some C4 rears going spare and wanted to know if they would be of use on your front brakes?

It had crossed my mind............so to clarify everything

C2 standard has front pads that are the same as C4 front and rear
C2 rear pads are different(small type)

Is it an easy swap fitting C4 calipers to front of C2

C2 and C4 both have the same front calipers which use the same pads. C4 has 4 pot calipers at the rear which also use the same pads (Nb. the pistons at the rear are smaller than the front calipers).

C4 rear calipers will directly fit on a C2. How easy it is to do is dependent on how siezed the brake line couplings are and you should change the brake bias valve. I'm in the middle of doing this at the moment. Here's a good thread to read (especially since 964 C4 rear calipers are not always easy to find so you may have to look for alternatives):
