Default Update

I have a brief update. I've been away on business and sick for far too long.

At any rate, I've driven the car and what I've found is:
  • It shifts in and out of gear easily before starting; even with todays 30F temps
  • Once started (from neutral) I must put it into 3rd or 4th before I can get it into 1st or 2nd
  • Double clutching does not help
  • Pumping the clutch pedal (well applying it several times, at least) does not help
  • Once warm it shifts just fine; at least today it did

I've not yet bled the system as I've been away or feeling too poorly to work on the car. I hope to do a full bleed tomorrow, but it may have to wait until next weekend.

Oh, and my brake light goes on shortly after driving (within a hundred feet, or so). I've added a bit of brake fluid, and it's registering at, or near, the max mark. I suppose it could take a bit more. I'm assuming this is a brake sensor wire problem, but I've not yet tried to track it down. Could be related I suppose.

Well, I finally got around to bleeding the entire hydraulic system (back in June) and it seems to have helped a great deal. Of course, it took four months, or so, to get to the work so the weather turned warmer which may have contributed. I'll continue to monitor and report if I learn anything new.

posted in the wrong thread... anyway...

Not sure if this was also mentioned... also in my to-do list... and related to your problem.

I just finished taking notes from that thread! Thanks, Jaime.

As for the wrong thread, I did mean to post here, though the comments may seem out of place. It seems that my hydraulic bleed has helped my shifting problem. Could be a coincidence, but I suspect that there was air in the clutch line causing less than a full disengagement.

Not you, me! I posted in the other clutch thread instead of this one.

I have exactly the same symptoms as this and they defintely improved after I bled the clutch but not completely cured. Also I only use the car at weekends and the symptoms also reduce the more I drive it and as it gets warmed up. I am doing a first track day in a couple of weeks so hopefully that will loosten things up....and not the opposite!
I might try bleeding the clutch again because the fluid was very dirty.

Give a good look at the slave hose. It seems that folks are finding them in need of replacement these days. I did get mine changed a while back.

Have fun at the track!

Well, the weather is turning cold here and I'm back having difficulty shifting out of gear after having the engine loaded up (slowing in gear).

One thing that definitely helps is blipping the throttle, as shesminetoo suggested back at post #23 in this thread.

Does that help anyone to understand what's causing the problem?

No question, if I blip the throttle the shifting problem just goes away; until the next light, any way.

I have recently done a complete hydraulic fluid flush due to a bad high pressure switch.

I haven't yet checked the engine mounts or the clutch pedal roll ping.

Can I check the engine mounts in the car? Will the classic example (pic below) be visible or must I remove the mounts to see this?

Mine was doing the exact same thing. It wouldn't come out of gear as I came to a stop. Blipping the throttle helped. As others have posted, it was from the incorrect grease being used on the input shaft. Unfortunately, they had to drop the engine to fix the issue ($$$$).

I'm hoping that the shop that did my clutch put the appropriate grease on the input shaft. I'd hate to have to drop the engine for that.

I have looked at my motor mounts. They can be seen easily from above the engine. They look exactly like the one on the right in the picture above; although upside down. I expect they should NOT look like this even when the engine is hanging from them.

Can someone please confirm that?

I measured my clutch pedal travel recently and discovered that I had roughly 135mm of travel rather than the spec'd 145mm.

I adjusted the rubber stop mounted to the floor board to enable 145mm of travel and thought I had fixed the problem. However, I've had difficulty pulling out of gear once or twice since. Pushing a little harder on the clutch pedal helps. Rev'ing the engine definitely helps.

maybe its the type of gear oil your using. what are you using.

i thought swepco was highly recommended or most used.
