Not sure what you mean by over run. If you mean what I think of as engine braking then it doesn't help. In fact, that seems to be what causes the problem.

I had a similar problem. Engaging and disengaging gears was much harder than usual. it turned out that a spring on the clutch assembly had broken and this prevented the clutch from fully disengaging.
Its a much less expensive fix, so check it out.

jack852,
Are you talking about the spring (item #6) in the following diagram?

I wish I could tell you, but I had a mechanic do the work and we didn't get that specific. As I understood it, there was a spring close to the clutch pedal that was causing my problem, but I do not know which one specifically. It was a cheaper fix than I had anticipated (Thank Goodness)!!!

Dfinnegan,
Mine does the same. I recently took it in for a service and the mechanic discovered a kinked clutch hose. It was already starting to bulge and he proceeded to replace it and bled the system afterwards. It seems to have improved it but it is still there to a lesser degree. I have found that blipping the throttle on the overrun cures it. Good practice for heal-and-toeing! I think it is what is commonly referred to as "clutch drag", and probably the result of dirt build-up in there. Anyway, driving like that has now become a habit with me....

Just to eliminate the clutch/master-slave cylinder variable one should be able to go from 2nd to neutral without even using the clutch. Lifting off on the throttle just as you're moving the gear selector from 2nd to neutral in one fluid motion should tell you, if the problem still exists, then it's something other than the clutch or any related components (i.e master-slave cylinder, hoses, springs etc.).
Hope this helps

To do this test , unload the gear , try to get the speed of the motor so that its not pushing the car forward and the car isn't spinning the motor . If you don't unload the gears , the test will maybe give "funny" results .

That was my problem which needed a new clutch. The "Trials" I had suggested were pumping the clutch for a possible slave cylinder or holding the clutch in for about 5 seconds for a possible dragging clutch.

Thanks for the input. I'm away on a business trip all week and will have to get back to this upon my return next Sunday. I may then be off again Monday so it may be another week after that before I can get back to this issue.
Thanks, again. I'll post here when I have new info.

Dfinnegan,
Did you ever do the bleed, and did it help? I bled mine yesterday, and was amazed at the amount of muck that came out of it, even though I replaced the slave and line last August, and bled it then. It seemed to help quite a bit. Feel is better, and it hasn't felt like it is dragging , and seems to allow gear changes like it used to. I am going to replace the master anyway (96k, it is original), but I think I am going to stall pulling the trans until it gets worse. Hopefully you will have a similar experience. Good luck.
