Which wheels should I use for the track?
Now that I well and truly have the track bug, I decided the next step was to get a second set of wheels and put track tyres on them. My C2 has 17 inch cup 1 replicas on (7.5J front and 9J rear). Being in the 'nothing bigger than 17 inch should be used on a standard 964' camp I was aiming to get anouther set of 17 inch replicas for my track tyres.
However, by chance, I came across a set of genuine, beautifully re-furbished 16 inch cup 1 wheels and I could not resist buying them. I'm sure you will see why from the picture below .
These are 7J front and 8J rear and are currently shod with brand new Yokohama AVS sport tyres (205 x 55 at the front and 225 x 50 at the rear).
So now I'm in a quandary of whether I should use my wider 17 inch wheels on the track or the new 16 inch wheels? What do you guys think?

Haven't checked the sizes available in 16'' but maybe the size selction will dictate you in which to use. I would go with 17'' cause I have big reds but that's me.

I too would not use "replica" wheels on the track. I have seen too many of them bend from simply driving them under load, plus several break!
I would look for a used set of factory 17s, or after market forged wheels from a quality manufacturer.

I would find a set of used Cup II wheels (7" and 9") and use them. The tire sizes you can find for 17" rims are better than the choices you have with the 7 & 8" x16" rims.

It's hard to get too precious about track wheels; By the time you've changed tyres umpteen times they all look well used so if you value a set of rims don't use them.
best bet is a set of early 996 17 in wheels. cheap as chips, light and strong. What's not to like? - apart from the look

That is the beauty of 964 Offsets. There are plenty of OEM options. 993, 996 which people will part with for a fraction of the cost of The upgrades that they got. I got a set of 7.5 and 9 Boxster Wheels with 75% P-Zeros for $600.

Some interesting food for thought there guys.
Reading between the lines, I guess most of you are recommending the bigger wheels as they'll provide more grip? And at the same time I should ditch the replicas (millemiglia) for some quality 17 inch rims.
I had a thought that the 16s would be good for reducing unsprung weight. However that would be of little value if the car doesn't have as much grip in the corners. And they are probably too nice to get beat up on the track .
BTW has anyone tried the Yoko AVS sports on the road or track? Here's what the tread pattern looks like:

keep the new 16's for the road, they would look so nice on your car, use your 17's on the track, i know a good place that could do them pink for you if required

If 17's are a must i agree a set of used cup I's or II's would be best. Here used cup I's with cosmetic issues will run about $500 a set cup II's are a bit more. I would recommend spacers with these. 3mm in the front and around 14mm in the rear.
