I'm in the market for a 964, talking to some Porsche owners and shops, and received conflicting opinions on whether a C4 is a more significant repair risk than a C2. I don't need AWD, but I don't know if I should be concerned about the AWD mechanisms failing and needing repair.
Specifically, I'm looking at a 1992 C4 with 150k miles on it. A couple of 964 owners I spoke to said that the accelerometers can fail in the C4 and are extremely costly to repair, but RMG in Sunnyvale, CA said it's not really a common problem.
Please weigh in...Thanks and happy Thanksgiving!

Hi ayw!
I have a C4 with 110k miles. I would pick the best MY92 I would get for my budget. Do not worry about the repair cost on the C4 system, pretty bulletproof if well serviced. Find a car with a history.
just my "non-track car" input. C2 is more relevant as a track car of course.

Buy one in good condition regardless of it being a C2 or C4. With Rennlist help you'll be able to fix anything that goes wrong, including accelerometers.
Personally I'm glad I went for a C2 (nearly bought a C4) because of the more tactile steering

Without getting into the endless C2 vs C4 debate, I would say why pay the extra weight penalty of a C4 if you don't need/want the 4wd? But at the end of the day, buy the one that presents the best condition/maintained car for the money that happens to be available to you. Personally, I'm a C2 guy, but in Texas, we definitely don't need 4wd except on our trucks!

Both models of 964's can be expensive to repair, so buy the best one you can find. Can a C4 be reliable? My anecdotal evidence says yes. Mine has 226K miles on it and is still going strong.
Before you decide on which model to buy, be sure to drive them both. The C4 has a different driving feel than the C2.

I have my C4 as a daily driver. Track is not my primary goal for this car.. so I use the C4 for all weather driving in the Oregon rain and snow... I figure it gets me the pleasure of a Porsche without worrying as much about going off the road backwards... it all depends on your personal goals for having the car.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Based on your responses, I think I might take a closer look at a '92 C4 with 150k miles on it. I was trying to gauge whether it was worth it to go through the hassle and cost of PPI if a C4 was something that I definitely did not want. Anything specific to the C4 that I should have them look out for? Thanks!

I just saw the 92' C4 your looking at on Craigslist and it looks like a great deal. Always get a PPI on whatever car you decide on. Don's Autowerks in Campbell is near to you if you need someone to do one.

You've probably found these sites, but there are some good 964 reviews at:

I'd say it's more accurate to say that EVERY 964 has a different driving feel so you really need to see for yourself! I've had 5 964's, and driven 7 different ones total - they ALL feel/felt completely different, irrespective of whether they were a C4 or C2.
Plus, every 964 will have its own issues irrespective of whether it's a C2 or C4 - issues which are all usually expensive!

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the links. I knew about the second one but had never seen the first one. Did you take a look at the black 964 on Craigslist out in Fremont as well? Wanted to compare your thoughts on it. Also, I sent you an email to your personal acct.
