Yeah, it was a Pitts Special S-2B. The S-2B is the two seat Pitts with an AEIO-540 engine (6 cyl, 540 cu in, 260 hp). I'm actually about to jump back into airplane ownership with a Yak-52. I've been without a plane long enough that I've forgotten the pain of paying all those bills, and need to be reminded again. Plus, I need something to make me say "You know, in comparison, that Porsche really doesn't leak much oil at all".

Pitts Hourly Cost
How does a Pitts cost up to $275/hour to run. We had a Maule M5-235 with the O-540. I always figured 15 gallons per hour for the fuel burn. As a rough calculation I always figured tht 3 times the fuel cost per hour is the total hourly cost.

The $275 number was more to the total direct and indirect (insurance, hangar, wing recover, etc) costs per hour over the 5 or so years I flew it - although, at $4+ a gallon these days for avgas, your formula wouldn't be too far off!

I still have the green roadster but the red '37 ford and the blue Ducati are gone. I could not find a picture of the '68 911 in white that started my passion for Porsche. I miss them but change is good.
