What brand / grade / octane gas do you use ?

It almost sounds like the knock detection is going off under load at those rpms?
Has your mechanic taken it for a run with the hammer attached and checked the knock numbers?

I am located in Santa Cruz CA. As to the knock detection, will check it out however I am sure my service guy has already done a static test on it. If I were to replace it, how much are we talking about in dollars?

If the gas was poor and the engine knocked , then the computer retarded the ignition ....
