Default Air Box

I heard that that you can drill holes in your air box and get more power and a nice sound. Please discuss....

This is a picture of the factory motor sound air box. My mechanic had this one laying around. It's a take off from a supercharger install. In fact it may be from my old supercharged one. I swaped mine out this week. It does give you a little more intake howl as you blast through 5,500 rpm. The part that looks chrome is not metal. It's fancy plastic. You can see the factory hole pattern here. Lot's of little holes. I would look for a take off if I were you.

There has been much debate over this issue
Doubtful if any power at all is made but it does give a nice roar at wot. I have mine completely cut away just like the pricey Fabspeed unit. I do like the sound but the *** dyno tells me very little. Considering that it does ingest much more hot air any power gains are doubtful. Try and get a spare cover and experiment so you can easily go back if not happy.

Good Luck

I tried it on an old spare cover I had and thought it was horrible, no power gain hideous howl that ruins the lovely sound my car makes, I swear my ears started bleeding!! By far the worst MOD I tried on my car.

I still have the lid if you want it? You are more than welcome, I will never fit it again!

Just like art, the airbox mod is purely subjective. I love my sound, along with the G-pipe conversion.

I've done all three (stock, drilled out, cone filters) and can offer no supportive data, but my take is that the increase in air flow is offset by the fact that its pulling warm/hot engine. Net result is probably nil. If there is a gain (or loss) it is negligible.

But I would say that the engine seems to rev more freely and it does definitely change the sound- if those are your goals- give it shot.
