Question Strutbrace?

Getting my new suspension very soon, so iam getting a struty for the front.
Ive done a search and threres a lot ov info, but ive seen a alloy part made by "cosmoracing" in canada that looks v good.
With the exchange rate its not a lot ov money, even with postage.
The only concern i have is about the lack ov adjustment. Has any one used this strutbrace? Are they any good?
In the add they say thats its a copy of some porsche motorsport part?
Thanks.

I fitted a Cosmo strut brace to my 3.0 Z3. No adjustment required and made a real difference. Didn't realise they did one for the 964, so will take a look.

The more adjustment the worse the brace as such adjustment provides for flex. Having said that, a non adjustable version not welded properly or with too little metal in certain areas could be less than optimal. Assuming it is a faithful recreation of the original, get the Fabspeed 964 GT2 EVO Front Strut Bar Domestrebe.

Russ,

I have this carbon brace in mine and i know a few UK users have it as well. Robmug owns the site and is a dedicated 964 man himself so i can't think of a better recommendation -

I wasn't keen on the look of the Cosmo one. Certainly nowhere near as good as the one I had on my Z3. Think I'll be looking elsewhere this time.

Now that sorted can I hijack teh thread

I have a strut brace. Brand new sitting under the stairs.

I have not fitted it heres why. Tell me Im worrying over nothing.

2 days after I bought it I had that little ding on my passenger side wing Which put me off fitting it as if it had been a bigger hit I was worried that if would have damaged the other side as well.

I read on here in some topics that fitting a strut brace to a C4 increases understeer which obviously I do not want.

Insureance do I declare it? If so they will try and Bend me over I just cant face that connversation been there done that and I can just imagine tryign to explain to a nice indian lady what a strut brace is 30 times
If I dont tell them will it render my policy useless?

You see my dilema I worry a lot

I'm going to guess that the comment pertained to an aftermarket sway bar, which can exacerbate C4 understeer, and not a strut brace. I can't imagine any detrimental effects caused by fitting one to your car.

Can't help you on the insurance question. In the US, the insurance companies typically ask us to declare safety equipment, not much more.

Pesty,

I have found that using specialist insurers (all my cars are modified to some extent and hence main stream insureres won't touch them), which are more often than not uk based, you should not have too many problems as they are usually staffed by enthusiasts or knowledgable people. They understand the cars, risks and arn't scared by mods and appreciate that cares owned by enthusiasts are ooften better maintained and driven that most mundane stuff.

good luck

Are strut braces for the 964 the same as for the 993?
I thought they were - all the pictures of the various products look identical?

I like the look of this one, but it's stated as 993 only.

I asked them and they don't know.

I have heard that with a strut brace fitted, if you are hit from the side, there is a much bigger chance your chassis will be bent than if you don't have one. This is the one big downside. Urban legend?

I think if you have a crash it will be the last thing on your mind!!!!

Next time you hear this, you may want to ask for an explanation. Who knows, you may be speaking with someone quite knowledgeable. I'm not sure, however, it's entirely true.

This side impact would need to involve one of the front wheels, so already we've narrowed down the likelihood of chassis damage due to a strut brace. But if one of the front wheels were actually involved in a collision, it seems likely that the strut brace might actually limit chassis damage. Since the front suspension points are tied together, the wheel have additional reinforcement which might spare the chassis of further damage.

In my expereience, the most common casualties in a side impact (on a front wheel) are the fenders, wheel and then the control arms. All can either bend or break due to a collision. If serious enough, the damage can extend to tie rods, brakes, supension mounting points, etc. But we're talking about a pretty serious hit.

Whether a strut brace would compound chassis damage in such an instance seems immaterial. We're talking about a big hit, so the outcome will be severe regardless of equipment. $0.02

I have this one - it's a faithful reproduction of the earlier RUF brace. Very, very stout and perfectly machined: Perfect Power
