How the heck do you get the weight down so low with all that stuff in there?

And where do you guys go to weigh your cars? I know the local dump has a scale...

Just curious.
Coincidentally, I just saw the parts on eBay with asking price of $13.5K or best offer.
3.8 conversion kit

Just a wild *** guess, but I'd put labor at 40-60 hours? So we're talking maybe $4K-$7K on top of the parts tab. Total tab sounds like $15K-$20K. I'm sure others (Geoffrey) can offer a clearer estimate of the costs.

You'd want the work done by a Porsche engine builder. Not just the dealer or a tuner but someone who rebuilds 911 race car engines for a living. Perhaps Dan Jacob's Hairy Dog Garage in Conecticut would be a good option for someone in your area.

Usually, I get my car's weight when I have my garage do a corner balance. They'll verify how much fuel was in the car and the weight of the shop tech sitting in the driver's seat when weighing the corners (which is how it should be done).

The low weight is due to Rob's car being a Factory built race car which is fairly spartan to begin with--2,500 lbs is the series spec with cage. These cars come without headliner, carpeting, insulation, a/c, oil cooler fan, heater blower, stereo, sunroof, street mufflers, undertray, etc. They also come with an aluminum front compartment lid, RS door panels, lighter battery and (if I'm not mistaken) thinner glass. You can read all about it at Rob's website:

pu911RSR - sorry just realized i did not answer your question.

Removal of the cage (i removed the CroMo one i had built when i raced it) is not that difficult.

sawall it out in sections, then grind down the tube stubs, Leave the base plates (welded in on all Andial cars) in place - paint body color
not much too it really. It should not be tied intot he A- pillar or B-pillar as they were not orignally when done by Andial

I looked at doing a 3.8 back when I rebuilt my engine - the pistons and cylinders, of the slip-in variety, are about $4000 and readily available from a lot of sources. Since my pistons and cylinders were fine, I opted not to sped the extra dough. All that's required are those P/C's, and then have the heads machined to fit. There are also the non-slip-in variety, which is a thicker cylinder, requiring machining of the case as well - they cost a bit more, too if I remember correctly. FVD stocks them...

Interesting, as the cages in euro cups are tied into the A & B pillar.

Hey Garrett,

Any idea how much additional hp you would gain by fitting just the larger pistons & cylinders? Would this relatively simple change get you to 300hp without swapping cams, cylinder heads, valves and engine management unit? (like in that Supercup conversion kit)

Wow!! Not for the weak of heart (or wallet).

Thanks!

~302hp on my (Kim's) Steve Weiner built 3.8, w/ stock exhaust. About 15 more w/ GHL and no cats.

Hey Ken - what else was changed? Chip, heads, injectors? Did you use slip-in cylinders? 302 is pretty nice considering a supercharger gets you only 50 or so more horses. Might be reason enough to shuck apart the old engine again this Christmas time...

Bought the car from Kim, who had it completely done by Weiner. I'd never build a 3.8 myself. If I ever do change things around on that car (say to faux GT2 from faux RS) I'll cobble together all this turbo stuff I have laying around.

About weight loss. I have always been told as a rule of thumb, that the loss or gain of about 12.5 lbs. is equal to the gain or loss of 1 hp. Not a bad way of eyeballing things. Converting to a MAF, along with some exhaust mods can be done for well under $2k. Weight loss tends to get costly if you start buying low weight parts.

Ken's (Kim's) car received RS cams, our own special 52mm intake valves, Aase springs, our Ti retainers, lots of lower end mods and careful assembly.
