Then your problem is connected to the DME control unit and not the speed reference sensor. Was the chip installed facing the wrong way? Did you ground yourself before touching anything inside the unit? Also check that the two 14-pin connectors under the driver's seat are connected properly.

Did you check the low voltage side too?

Anyway, I still have these parts but not the white paste.
The white stuff is just heat-conducting paste available from any Radio Shack or electronics supply store.

Thanks Jason - what do you mean by grounding the DME? I disconnected the battery first, then removed the DME. With respect to the chip, it is installed correctly. I have not checked low voltage, not sure how. The thing that I keep coming back to is that 'new' little buzzing sound that happens just before I crank the car...

So what should I do before going to the reference mark sensor?

Thanks Jason, good to have you on this thread.

hi-- here is one more thing to check. you stated in your original post that you had a really bad backfire. this happened a year ago to me, and it has happened to others too. after the backfire i could not get it to start, and symptoms were similar to yours. check all of the rubber gaskets that hold the intake manifold to the engine. when mine backfired (another guy had this happen to him also)- it blew all of the hoses off. this included all six of the smaller hoses, and i think 2 of the four larger ones going to the intake. i don't know what caused this backfire originally, but i put all new hoses in (total of 10) --some appeared to not be in too great of shape--- and have had no problems since. worth a check----tom

thanks Tom. I read your post last night about this and I went out and checked the car. All of mine are connected properly. The backfire seemed back because the garage door was down... and therefore it was a lOUD noise ;-)

I for sure don't know .
You could try send it in for a look see ,
or you could find a known good one to try in your car .

I am working on borrowing a friends.

From my searching the only other thing I think it could be is the reference mark sensor. Anyone know how those fail?

Mine is in the shop for a similar problem. Mine cranks, barely turns over then stops. My DME appears to be fine as I can hear the fuel pump. The Mechanic working on the car found the distributer belt broke and feels this is the problem. I will know a little more later this week.

swapped out the DME with one a friend had, still won't start. We've isolated that noise I mentioned to front of engine right above the fan.

The fact that you have a back fire tells me you have spark of some sort .
Without a spark , the gas in your exhaust system would not fire off .
