Default 3rd brake light wires

I plan to add the 993 brake light to my 964. I am replacing my rear glass with Euro so I won't have the black screening to annoy me. I am feeding the wires that went to the 964 CHMSL up through the rubber surround and exiting at the top center of the glass.

I have the special connectors to solder onto my exisiting wires but am wondering exactly how much lead length one needs to connect to the wires coming from the 993 light fixture. The TSB recommends 200 mm, 8 inches, but that seems excessive. Could I get by with 4 inches?

From memory, the wires connected to the 3rd brake light were fed through the rubber surround into the space above the headlining and connected there. My feed was taken from the left hand rear stop light and fed up the left hand C pillar into the roof.

As long as the wires meet I guess it doesn't really matter how long they are!!

Regards

Dave

Steve,

I understand your question but, from my experience at least, the wires from the light go through the rubber from the outside to join INSIDE the roof.

Yes, that is what one needs to do if one does not replace the rear window, because the wires from the 964 CHMSL come from the rubber surround underneath the roof lipline and into the interior of the car. So the TSB recommends adding a long pair of wires from the shelf connector, routing them underneath the roof liner and then through a hole in the back of the roof.

I want to use the exisiting wires from the CHMSL but reroute them to come out through the rubber to the exterior of the car and not to do what the TSB calls out.

I will have no wires in the roof when I am done.

Steve,

I understand what you are saying now. I'm assuming that this "CHMSL" is the US-specific standard fitment that partially blocks the view in the rear view mirror. For the life of me, I can't guess what "CHMSL" stands for - I'm guessing the last bit is Stop Lamp but my brain is in oversrive trying to guess the first bit. Please put me out of my misery!!!

Center High Mounted Stop Light.
okay, now i get why this is confusing you.

I guess if anyone has had to replace their light in a 993, then they would know how the length of wires needed from edge of window rubber to connect to the light.

Just post it here as a thread with any pictures and following any additions/corrections, it will be moved/copied to the DIY forum.
