Default Importing to Canada....

Does anyone have experience with importing a US 964/993 into Canada from the US? I have reviewed the online info and have a couple of questions-
1. Duty- what is the rate? There is no info regarding this.
2. No specific modifications are listed for Porsches but there is general talk about bumpers (8km min) and daytime running lights. Has anyone been through the modification process and if so, what did you have to do, if anything at all.

thanks

The Duty on a Porsche imported into Canada is 6.1% if the car is less than 15 years old, if older , no duty. The duty is paid on the purchase price including GST & PST.

Daytime running lights is no problem depending on the model, in most cases it is just a relay. You can pick it up at any Porsche dealer. The bumper hight I do not know anything about.

All european cars have a duty no matter the age. 6.1% Plus your 14% tax. You pay the one tax at the border and the other when you register it with the DMV.

No problems with bumper, do not worry. You only have to change the daytime running lights on anything newer than 15 years.

Canadian tire will do the inspection for you. This is for the RIV.

Must have title and recall clearance letter to the Border 72 hours in advance.

Go to the pelican forum in the canadian section. This has been discussed to an extent that you will not have anymore questions.

20% tax/duty on a value that is way above the actual sales price? Unreal.....

Our gov't certainly makes it painful to import a car from the US, but it's better than it used to be: it wasn't all that long ago that you could not import *any* used cars into Canada, at any price.

Hello Greg: Are you sure about " it wasn't all that long ago that you could not import *any* used cars into Canada, at any price"? I know a few friends of mine who, more 15 or so years ago, used to head down to Washington State, Oregon, and California to bring cars in, and they made a bit of a living from it. But I could be wrong. Maybe they had some other gig, like exporting BC Bud . . .

Hi etom,

It was about 1972 that I was vacationing in Germany, and had intended to bring back a Capri 2600 RS with me. Almost coincident with my arrival, Canada changed its import laws to prohibit bringing in cars unless they had been owned personally for more than 12 months. I even went to the Embassy in Koln to see about an exemption since I had missed the date by only a few days, but I was met by a stone wall. I then found that used cars were covered by the same ruling (which had been in place even longer).

It was clearly a case of the Canadian auto industry lobbying to protect its dealers, but as the exchange rate soared in later years, an official prohibition was no longer needed, and the laws were eventually ammended. I can't recall when that was done, but it was prior to 1989 when I brought in my first 911S from New Jersey.

I live in Ottawa and drive a 90 C2.

R6XTERRA. You are wrong about the duty, If a Porsche imported from USA is over 15 years of age there is no duty, you are right the duty is payed on purchase price plus GST, PST is payed when you register the car. The cars age is the build date not the date it was registered.

I believe this is the relevant section from the Customs Tariff manual. Duty is 6.1% regardless of age. If you imported a vehicle not made in NA and didn't have to pay duty consider yourself lucky...

I imported mine when it was 15 years 4 months old. You have to pay Duty and GST (and PST if you live in one of those provinces).

The only thing exempted is the RIV inspection (out of province inspection still applies though).

Ah yes, the "over 15 years old" exemption from the RIV. Let me tell you about it. Last year, I brought in a 28 year old bike, and though it is clearly exempt from the RIV program (wait for it ...), I still had to have all the forms filled out and stamped by the Border Folk.

But, they had forgotten to stamp the box where is said "not required if over 15 years old", and so none of the 4 licensing agencies I went to in town would process it! They made me take the form to the local Customs office to have it stamped.

The only glimmer of humor in the whole experience was the reaction of Customs Officer to whom I presented my form to for stamping. He said "... but it says right here 'not required'.... " to which I moaned "Yes I know, but the license office won't accept it". I guess the look on my face said it all, because the guy then replied "Looks like you'll be one happy guy if I stamp it here, right?" .

The sound of a big "THUNK" on the desk top brought that big smile to my face, and restored a tiny, teeny bit of faith in Gov't bureaucracy's ability to think.

I think customs agents have to take a course in "humourless expressionism". And the US border guards have some sort of program that renders them unable to smile.
(now that I've said that, I'll probably be tagged the next time I travel)
