Default Clutch Slip?

Normally I dont have a problem with gear changes, but last night whilst having a quick blast up a dual carriageway (2 lanes each way) i hit the rev limiter very easily on changing up from 1st to 2nd. it felt like the clutch slipping i.e. all revs and slow to accelerate. Did I press the accelerator too quickly on the change up or is this the traction control taking over???

The car is a 1990 C4 Coupe.

thanks

From your description, it sounds like your clutch may be worn. How long has it been since the clutch was changed?

Hi Rob,

the clutch was changed at 41k and again at 48k (which is odd) its now on 98k so i suppose the bad news is it could be on its way out. I dont have any problems normally just on the wot acceleration......

If this has happened only once, I would say you hit a slick and lost traction. Try on a dry road where traction is good. If you see a mis-match between the tachometer and speedometer, they you know the clutch is slipping. Don't let it slip for more than an instant, or you will soon smell the dreaded burned clutch stench.

Scamper - I'm researching 964 purchase, I note you're in Wiltshire too. Could you PM / email me as I'd like to ask some questions offline, if you have the time ?

Scamper,

I agree with Springer, double check that this is a recurring problem before doing anything else. I had another thought on what would cause a clutch to slip. In addition to a worn clutch disk, it could be caused by oil getting on the clutch from a leaky main seal or tranny seal. Is there any oil drips coming from the bottom of the bell housing? In some ways, it doesn't matter. If the clutch is slipping, the fix is the same, drop the engine/tranny and open it up. Replace parts as necessary.
