Default Side Sill removal

I remember seeing some post on this topic, but can't seem to find them. I need to remove one of my side sills to repair a scratch and re paint. I hear they can be quite difficult to remove and replace. Can any one give me some info on this. Thanks

Easy to remove, but you will probably need new clips. The one you got will probably break.

Just did this.

Get 6 each of:

Clip 999 591 916 40 You may break these removing the sill
Grommet 999 702 160 40 You will definitely break these removing the sill.

Also pick up a few plastic nuts that are either missing or stripped, 999 049 022 40

If you pivot a large flat head screw driver directly over the clips it is possible to remove the sill with damaging any of the clips. But I guess I would still want to have a few extra on hand just in case.

I just did this yesterday! Discount tire broke both of my rocker panels by trying to jack up my car with the usual car lifts... last time I take the car to them! I've always just taken them loose wheels!

The rubber stuff is expensive - it's almost $100 in parts for new rubber trim pieces.

Its easy, but best to have the clips, male & female on hand. I broke about half of mine and had to order from Zims. Plan on breaking some. I tried to epoxy, while I waited for the clips to come, but the epoxy didnt work well for me, others apparently have had good success gluing the clips back together The new clips are cheap and easy. You also dont have to worry about your shark fin falling off if you use new clips.

Garrett, what rubber trim pieces are you talking about? The black rubber strips for the long side sill are $13.50 from Sunset. The shark fin's seal is slightly less than that.

Unfortunately my car has the turbo part number ones which are $23 or so apiece... but it sure looks good with new seals! The prior owner of my car must have had the rockers sprayed while they were still installed on the car! I had to sand down a paint ridge from the paint that covered my prior rubber strips!

Thanks for the info, I will order up a set of hardware from Sunset tomorrow. No I am not afraid to take them off. Now the big question is do I paint the whole part or leave the lower section black. I am torn on this...

It looks like no-one has mentioned it so far so...

The fastening near the front wheel arch is a plastic nut. You need to remove the little plastic flap inside the wheel arch (3 self tapping screws) and take off this nut. The rest of the clips (5 of them as I remember) are poppers.

For all those that have done this before, in relation to the small rubber seals ducnine speaks of, the ones that push into the groove on the back of the sill, do you just push them in there or do you glue them in with weatherseal adhesive?????

I just pushed seals into place. That seemed to be the way the original ones were installed. There is a little groove on one end (if I remember correctly) that fits into a little rib on the part. I think it helps locate it properly. The parts that I got were about an inch longer than it needed to be so I snipped off the excess.

Before removing the old rubber strips, make note of the orientation so that you put the new on back on properly. It goes on real easy.

I wouldn't trim the excess. You can fold the end inside the sill. This will lock the strip in place and provide some give when the rubber shrinks over time. This is how mine were when I removed them.
