fan blade needed
If anyone has an extra fan blade that will fit a 1991 964 please let me know.. I’m looking to buy. you know, an extra one that’s just sitting around the house.. Collecting dust.. One that you’re thinking about using for target practice.. etc <g>
The previous owner gave me a repair orders of lots of work done. One of them was for a used fan blade. Well, the fan blade has a crack on one of the blades. The last thing I want is that sucker coming off as it’s spinning. i'm starting to wonder if he forgot to install it before he sold it to me.. hmmm.
Anyway, if you happend to know of one avalable please let me know.

I'm in need of one too. My recently purchased 91 coupe has a crack at the root of one of the blades. I priced a new one and they go for $375. I'd prefer to spend less if I can.

also, how the HECK does a fan blade get cracked in the first place? out of all the moving parts on a 91 964 to break,, this would be one of the last things on my list.

Is it the actual blade cracking, or possibly the coating/paint? I ask because a friend's 993 is showing the same signs on at least one blade - around the base.

I think they crack because at one time the fan had bad bearings which caused the blade tips to hit the fan shroud. The bearing probably got replaced but not the fan itself.

That makes three Robs with cracked fan blades. Fortunately my 964 is off the road and in the middle of being slowly stripped down to the bare chassis, so I don't have any pressing need. I have however been on the lookout for one, as I will eventually need it when it is motor rebuild time.

If a groove is cut along the crack and filled with weld I can't imagine there would be a balance issue. If there is still a concern, any good machine shop that does the TIG weld will have a lathe they can balance the fan with and they may even have the equipment to detect other cracks not humanly visible. An hour of machine shop time to do the repair will be definitely cheaper than buying a new one or someone elses problem.

I would not even consider welding the fan. Every time I have watch cast aluminum welded, there was a crack in the weld or the heat-affected zone during cool-down. $400 does not sound too bad compared to what could happen if the blade separated at the engine red line. Chances are there are salvage yards with good fans for about half price.

I MIG welded mine 7 years ago after one of the fins fell completely off (i.e. without incident - in other words it didn't shoot through the rear deck lid - I found it lying down by the bottom pulley) and it's been fine ever since. I don't think you have to be too concerned with the centrifigal force (i.e. we all know centrifigal force is fictious especially on a few grams of aluminum) but there's more of a concern where the piece ends up like in between a belt and pulley - that would be bad. With a TIG there's even less heat transfered, so I believe the results would be better - I certainly wouldn't have had to do the grinding I did to remove the access material the MIG weld left. The only reason I suggested welding was I got the impression that cost was a concern. If money isn't a concern then spend the $200.00 - $400.00 vs. $50.00 (i.e. at most) and if it buys peace of mine then it would be more than worth it.

My car had a fan that was cracked at the base of a fin that the PPI did not catch. I got the replacement from 20th Street Auto in Arizona. I now have a spare that I picked up on eBay after the fact for $125 IIRC for that just in case I need it moment. Of course I have lots of those just in case parts which helps explain why I can barely get two cars into a three car garage.
