Relative newbie. Have a 90 C2, 964. In the past 2 weeks, have been having following symptoms: fan blower (interior) set to 1, 2, 3 or 4 and everything is fine. In some cases, put on a/c. Then all of a sudden, fan stops blowing, a/c is not working. Then comes back on. This is intermittent. No specific conditions bring this on. I hear no noises (such as squeals, etc) indicative of any bearings, etc going out.
Have read the various threads and began the seek/find/eliminate problems. All the fuses work. Rechecked connection and all seem in order. Noticed a big hole in duct. Not sure what the part is called. Please see attached photo
My question is....would this gap cause my problem I am experiencing? Has anyone had to ever replace? If so, what is the part called and is it a realtive easy fix from a DIY (with help of a mechanic relative)?
It's called "air duct" - part no: 964.106.403.02. It seems fairly common for it to split and it will destroy the air pressure from the main engine driven fan to the rear blower. If the rear blower doesn't produce enough air pressure on the differential pressure flaps the a/c and the internal dash blowers will switch off. It's not expensive and a fairly easy fit.
would this gap cause my problem I am experiencing?
A large gap in the rear blower duct work will not cause the front fans to operate intermittently but failing solder joints on the front face of the CCU (connecting the switches) will. There are a few other things you also need to look at. Do you have access to a Bosch Hammer or a multimeter?
Take it off the dashboard and look out the back relay : 2 contacts to be cleaned.
Spray some KF contact on temp/fan rotactors
Blow compressed air on the small fan and air probe et look up on the weldings.
OK. Trying to find time to find out what's going on. Fixed hole, checked the fuses and still looking at contacts.
What I have recently noticed is that the a/c and fan blow fine when weather is cool and car has been sitting in garage. After it's been on the road for a while, it turns off. I am wondering if it has to do with engine heating up and causing something to get loose.
Does any experts out there have any other thoughts?
