964 Turbo or 965???
I have always loved the old 964 Turbo 3.6, but a friend was telling me recently that it is actually called a 965, not a 964 Turbo. After researching for a while, I saw results for both 964 Turbo and 965. I was just wondering if anyone here knew the answer to this.

965 was an internal code used for something else - it was never finished but some parts were carried over to the 91-94 911 Turbo. It was never officially the 965, but the number has stuck.
964 Turbo = 965 = C2 Turbo = 911 Turbo 2... they all refer to the same thing; the 1991-1992 (3.3) & 1993-1994 (3.6) 911 Turbo.

The original turbo concept to accompany the 964 series was to be the 965. It was a 959 wrapped up in a 964 body (very basic description). AWD, twin turbo the whole 9 yards. However it turned out to be too expensive at the time and was scrapped. Porsche could not at the time afford to build this thing.
It was replaced by a cheaper alternative which was the 1989 Turbo engine bolted into a 964, retaining the CIS but now with what I electronic support. The successor of the 965 was in fact to follow in 1996 when the 993TT was released. The TT was what the 965 was supposed to be back in 1990. In fact from what I have learned the 993TT is one much better machine than the 965 would have ever been. The 965 by the way has been destroyed. Only photographs remain along with a few special parts not all of which were just used on the 964 Turbo. The 968CS, M030 and Turbos got some stuff from the 965 as well.

PS WTL or Werks Turbolook is the abreviation for "aftermarket conversion". I bet this advert was in Singen Germany nicht wahr.

Do a search on the 964 turbo forum. There have been articles in Excellence mag and some others in the past year also. Rumor has it that all but 1 of the 965 prototypes were destroyed but there is no knowledge of its whereabouts or proof of this.
The difference is the 951 and 930 were actual internal designations for those cars although not the case with the 964 turbo but many parts start with a 965 prefix. It is just easier to use 965 since no model actually was produced it seems to have stuck.

Ludvigsen: Well, the 965 you’d have to say was along Bott lines. It was to be a twin turbo four-wheel-drive, all singing, all dancing, top of the range turbo model. We have the story in the book. We have a couple of pictures of styling models of the car and they built a number of prototypes. Bez essentially killed the 965 program. He felt it would be way too expensive, too complex, too heavy, too everything and eventually, during his administration, the project was stopped. They regrouped and relaunched a very clever turbo adaptation that kept the Turbo in business. The 965 also served as a trial horse for some other engines that they were thinking of for the future, liquid cooled V8s in the rear, that sort of thing, which I think we show for the first time in the book.

And there are also parts on a 964 turbo that start with 901.
The C2 Turbos are not 965s, but many people seem to like the designation.

I stumbled across another article on the 965 slated to be the 969. Its in the June 2005 issue of Excellence Magazine titled "The Turbo that Never Was"

Type 965 was a 1988 planned range topping four cam twin-turbo 911 whyle the Type 969 was a planned marketing designation for Type 965, also from the same year.

964 turbo is the generally accepted moniker. I tend to use 965 when I'm feeling up my own a'rse a bit. Or Turbo II. Also when up my own
