Question 9V battery = 12V?

I'm seeing 9V battery powered plug-ins sold for the cigarette lighter that claim to hold memory (radio, engine motronic, etc.) while the car's battery is disconnected.

Now, I've spent a small number of $20's to my mechanic for him to adjust my car's engine computer to run w/ my LWF. (And it does! quite smooth. no stalls at all, unlike default settings... ) But disconnecting that battery is one sure way to make his efforts (and my $20s) go, "...phfffft!"

So, has anyone experience w/ these 9V plug-in do-hickeys working for short term 964 disconnects?
And maintaining 964 engine 'puter memory values?

If so, how does 9V = 12V? I'm confused.

Default

These set-ups provide enough juice to keep things in memory (DME, radio settings, etc.). You can amke one yourself from an old car power adapter and a 9v battery clip. Postive goes to the center post and negative goes to the side clip.
