Default Yet another Antenna Booster replacement (Dash removal post)

While researching the problem for poor radio reception using the good old SEARCH feature of this site, it had always returned the possibilities of:

1. Antenna lead from booster bad - small inner wire cut and requires reconnection.
2. Bad antenna booster (part # 964-645-173-00)
3. Bad Radio
4. Just sucks...deal with it

Furthermore related post almost always resulted in the question: "How do I remove the upper dash to replace booster?"

To help everyone with the location of the booster and dash removal I took some pictures when I replaced mine.

I'll update dash removal procedures later (actually someone here had a good description but no pics)

location of booster behind dash:

location of hidden 10mm nut (pic 1):

location of hidden 10mm nut (pic 2):

location of hidden 10mm nut (pic 3):

Clock removal suggest for easy access to nut (LHD):

2 notches in vent which need to be press down for removal:

Somehow I managed to remove my booster from under the hood. It seemed easier than taking the dash out.......

The dash is remarkably easy to remove - not the 1st time, though. And you don't cut your hand reaching through the alarm area. I used a wing nut in the "hidden screw" to make it easier. Turns out my antenna was loose - now I can get those stations I had given up on.

Sooner of later you'll need to remove the dash. My sealing foam was so brittle, it blew black dust. All the while, I was worried that black dust was oil and fanbelt particles being blown through a leaky heat exchanger. No leaky H.E. and now, no black dust. Also a good time to look for rust and window seal leaks.

The real question is, is the radio reception as good as a "modern" car?

I have a new antennae to replace the old since I dorked the end that goes into the radio. I'll add this to my ever growing list of to-dos. Thanks for the write-up.

What kind of aux antenna do you guys recommend? I did this dash removal today to see if I am connected properly. All seems well visually once I got the dash off (BTW) Thanks for the head's up on the nut near the clock.. I would have definitely done the same thing...

All wires seem okay.. but my radio reception is still pretty lousy.. are there alternatives?

Thanks..

I hope something is just not connected well on mine as I cannot even get clear reception on one of our local stations.

Check the plug going into the radio- it's a VERY thin wire that if broken, will give you the weak reception. I tried to fix mine and got the plug too hot and badly deformed it. Bought a new antennae that is just waiting for time to put it in.

Question: Can I reach the wiring loom of the five dials after removing the top of the dash? Will help me trace a wiring problem. Thanks

bumping a old thread....

there are 3 wires coming out of the booster that aren't connected to anything. I have an aftermarket radio and wondering if they were forgotten or no longer needed? thanks.

I have to do this.
Does anyone know if the antenna wire that goes into the radio can be repaired?

Thanks,
Dave
