Thanks Stephen. The **** off valve was broken and I had it replaced a few months ago. Also a pipe under the expansion tank had perished and was seeping fuel especially when the tank was full. This was also replaced. This improved matters considerably but as my post indicates there would appear to be another problem.
It is interesting that this appears to be a problem with some cars.

Thanks Jason & Urge. Filler neck was replaced in 2003 by a previous owner.
I will check out the bottom tank connection this weekend via the inspection cover.
The odd thing about my problem is that it is worse after a long drive and standing overnight. If the car is left a few days it clears - so I can't think that it is a leak - it seems to be related to the fuel system running for a while then standing.

Ian - there may have been revisions to the part since 2003...I replaced mine recently with version 07...
However, my fuel smell was with a full tank and with hard driving. Worse in hot weather.
Has yours always done it?
It MAY be that your carpet smells...driving alongs allows the smell to avaporate and lessen, but when stood overnight, the confined space of the luggage area makes it seem worse in the morning.
Try removing the carpet for a while...

Hi Rob - I will try to find out from Leeds OPC when the 07 suffix filler neck was introduced. Carpet is not smelly. Also noted on checking previous owners invoices that he also bought a 'fuel line' for £150 in 2003. I guess this must be the supply pipe from the tank to the engine that runs through the transmission tunnel. He was clearly having a problem at the time but of course I don't know if he solved it. Boot had a fuel smell until I replaced a broken cut off valve in expansion tank and replaced a perished pipe under the expansion tank. It seemed to get better, but has deteriorated again recently. Strasse have pulled tank forward and removed expansion tank to check all pipes & connections but can find nothing wrong!

see my new post. for me its not at the hoses but at the factory installed L pipe on the bottom of exspansion tank. it could be well over looked but it leaks, more fumes than anything.
