Default Help - Metal on Metal sound when start car...

Need help diagnosing a problem. I have a 1989 964 C4. Over the last two days every time I turn the ignition I hear a grinding sound that gets progressively worse each time I start the car. It goes away as soon as the car is started.

It sounds like a starter problem. Has anyone had this issue, and is it safe for me to start it again to get it to the shop or should I get the car towed.

I appreciate any responses!!!

Thanks,

Jack

I had a similar problem but the sound was more like a rattle than a grind. It was the timing chain tensioners. Hope that helps.

Mine grinds on starting too. Hoping it's the starter, and not the ring gear. 200 vs 2000 in repairs. The 2000 includes a new clutch, but still lots of $$$. Does it prevent the car from starting, or just making noise?

Default Metal on Metal

The car starts, but it takes a little longer now. It sounds like metal is grinding when the key is turned, but once it starts up the noise goes away.

I have no problem when driving the car. Here's hopin for the inexpensive problem.
