My first DIY Completed - Steering Camshaft Seal
I just finished up my first project on my 90 C4. It had been leaking oil like no tomorrow. I thought about having a shop do the work and then I thought how much I could save (since parts were cheap) by doing it my self. Here are some comments from the project:
* I did not drain anything - oil or power steering fluid
* All work was done on ramps - still a little chicken about jack stands - but will get there one day
* Sealed protective glasses are needed at a minimum. Full face and head coverage would be better as I still see black gunk in my hair that fell from the bottom of the car.
* No gloves since I needed all the room I could get - very little room when doing this - especially with wheels and heat exchangers still on.
* Make sure you tighten down the 2 hex nuts at the back of the steering box before putting the power steering belt back on and everyone below the engine. Found out the hard way and had to pull the lower pulley and belt back off to get enough room to tighten these.
* In none of my research did I find that the old seal was a b&^ch to get out.
Other than the few minor things, this was not a difficult project. Now my car does not leak - - well at least from the power steering camshaft.

Three Wheelin'
What you were missing was a seal removal tool.
It will change a 5 hour fight with a seal into a 30 second operation.
It sorta looks like a little pick axe. (sorta).
They are inexpensive,(about $5) but most peoples tool boxes dont have one.
