Question Size of screw holding the Calipers?

Hi,
I'm ready to change to the brake pads but I just realized I need to buy the socket with the allen head to detach the calipers from the susp. arms

Does anyone remember the size of those screws, I can't even tell for sure if they're hex or star.

Is the same size of screw for rear and front?
Do you know the torque specs. so I tight them correctly when I put them back?

I have a 90-C2 with single piston caliper on the rear.

Does anyone know of a good tech-article on how to change the brake pads?

Thanks!
Jasper

Just did this last weekend on my C4.

Rear - 10mm Hex socket - get two at least 6" long in the event one breaks. / Torque 85 Nm
Front - 19mm standard socket / torque 85 Nm

http://p-car.com/diy/brakepads/ - its for 993 but its the same mostly.

dont take the caliper off! Just unhook the metal snap above them and drop in the new ones

huh? In the rear I tried to pull the pads up like in my old SC but they're too big so the caliper must come off.
I can't remember the fronts thou...

I agree with Jim, there should be no reason to take the calipers off. I've changed mine without doing so. See this thread

I never had any problems with the rears prior to switching to the 4 piston ones.

Two things to check:
1 - is there a lip on the rotor? Just pry back the pads to clear the lip.
2 - does the pad feel like it is solidly attached to the piston? If so, you have "mushrooms" - anti-vibration pads attached. Simply run a putty knife between the back of the pad and the the piston, you will feel a slight rise about 1/2" down the back of the pad, that is stuck to the pad with adhesive. Most of us do not bother using them (unless you encounter SQUEAL).

Good luck, and let us know what was the problem.

Changing the brake pads and many other DIY procedures are on www.p-car.com

You do not need to remove the calipers (and the rear calipers are hard to get off). You don't need the wear senors either, but they must be replaced or shorted out if you want to avoid the dash light.

Good news everyone!
As suggested I just had to push the piston a little bit back into the caliper and the pads came out!
This is so easy that I did the left side while waiting for my wife! Tonight I'll do the other side

Thanks!
Jasper
