Hot Driving!

Hot Driving!
So the weather finally got better here in Toronto. My first air cooled Porsche. SO, the paranoia is setting in. Whats the deal with dirving these AMAZING cars in stop and go traffic in heat heading home from work. My temp went to half way (maybe even 1mm above) for the first time since I owned here. She seems to sound a little more "chattery" when shes hot (more valvetrain noises and such). Is there anything that I should do, any tips for driving these cars when hot? Can I accelarate as I normally would when the motor is pretty hot? Should I avoid stop and go traffic? Can I drive her like a liquid cooled car and not think about it??
Any tips from long time owners would be great!
Thanks crew

Uh, what is "hot" there? Loads of people drive in stop and go in 100F weather - as long as your oil cooling fan is working right should be no worries. If your temp gets one tick away from red then you can start worrying. You should actually hear your valves less as it gets warmer - maybe some pundit can chime in on what that extra noise is - I don't recall more noise when hot.

The thermostat should open just below the 194F mark (at 188F). You can tell if this occurs because the right-front wing will get warm to the touch.
The oil coiler fan should then come on about a third up from the 194F mark (at 212F). You can tell by placing your hand under the right-front bumper in front of the wheel and feel for air blowing. You should hear the fan, too.
At 239F the oil cooler fan switches to high speed.
I've never seen more than 10 o'clock on my car even when my fan switch was out and I drove in stop-n-go into the city in roughly 90F weather.
I did see close to 10 o'clock when my thermostat went out (stuck closed) earlier this year when the weather was quite a bit cooler (~50F).
I believe it is p-car.com that has the write-up for all of this.

I notice a quick instance of engine ping when she get real hot and I have not added 5 gallons of 101 octane to the tank from the station down the hill. You can drive around it by keeping RPMs above 3000.

Jack,
For hot city driving get that rear spoiler up permanent !! My C4 , being one of the first made didnt have the rear spoiler control , so guess what was one of the first updates .
It really makes a big difference.
All the best with your new toy.
Geoff

Has anyone checked the oil cooler fan function?..it id designed to move air over the fender mounted oil cooler in slow moving situations. The low speed function may not be operating, the series resistor may have failed...
Good luck, Jerry
