Default Will this pass the MOT?

I'm afraid not...took the 965 in for its MOT yesterday and the garage did this to it....ouch . Luckily he's a decent bloke and is paying for new wheel and tyre. They are 18" 3.6 Veloce wheels - am I fine just buying one new one from here?

Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Doubtful it will pass. Is the sidewall of the tyre damaged? I can't quite make it out... but if it is, then it's likely to be a fail.

How on earth did they manage to do that?

It's a definite fail, don't worry! He kerbed it on a roundabout and the rim is buckled. I've been on the hunt for a replacement and it's not easy...seems like it's a 4-6 week wait but I might be able to source a reconditioned one. What fun!

Reconditioned, at someone else's expense, not bloody likely.

good luck.

Since when does MOT'ing a car involve driving it around a roundabout?

Why on earth did the tester take the car out for a drive? Surely it is not a requirement of the MOT! I think the guy was taking the **** and took your car for a joyride.

The guy was obviously out for a hammer drive and ran out of skill around the roundabout and curbed your car. I would be looking at any possible suspension damage. I would also demand a full corner balance and alignment. He probably knocked everything catywompus. What a puff.

Fear not guys, he hasn't f***ed me over. He's my local mechanic but gets the MOTs done elsewhere for me and I do trust him. But I take the points about other damage etc. As for settling for a reconditioned wheel, I'm not sure what choice I've got unless I want it off the road for a month as I can't seem to source a wheel sooner than that...

Any one know of any other places to source one?

I'd suggest that you get the mechanic to get his hands on a interim 18" wheel on loan, and that you wait the 4-6 weeks for a new one.
That'd be my action in your situation.
Maybe a RLr has a 18" track wheel they can lend you?
Pay it Fwd and all that...

If you will settle for a outer-rim that is not original you can get replacements from Design911.co.uk (no affiliation). I had 2 of the outer rims on my split-rims crack and I simply got my mechanic to remove the outer bolts and fit a new rim to it. Cost about £90 for the rim and took my mechanic about 90 mins to do including sealing it. No problem with either of the new rims (one front, one back) after a few years and no signs of laquer peeling. There are various styles of bolts used, some require a simple hex socket the other is a a 10 pointer star and is a bugger to get hold of. Let me know if you want one as I do have a url stored somewhere I can dig out for you.

I always thought that if a car has an LSD, the braking test cannot be done on the rollers; can cause damage to the diff.? Always insisted my 944 Turbo was driven to test the brakes. Perhaps a waste of time?

I would get him to pay for 2 new front tyres, saying that they have to be changed in pairs.

Thanks all for your suggestions. It seems that the 3.6 Veloce wheel is a bit of a b'ugger to find with performancewheelsupplies being the only dealer (the velocewheels site goes to the same dealer - thanks anyway Superunknown - and other sites also source from there). I've managed to source a new one from them but it's been scratched in transit to them and they need to send it to be recon'd first - to Germany of all places. So I'm looking like a good two week wait.

In the meantime the MOT is going to run out - is this a risk I can take? Although I can't drive the car as is I don't much fancy having an un-MOT'd car sitting outside the house, technically uninsured. Am I being overly paranoid? I'm thinking of trying to borrow some wheels just to put it through the MOT...should I just chill and wait for the new wheel and get the MOT sorted after? Maybe I'm just p'issed because the garage man didn't even give me a discount on my BMW track car service as a goodwill gesture...

What would you do?
