Default Check engine light

Ok my check engine light is on....

I recently changed my oil and the level may be a bit high so I will check it again tomorrow.

I also changed my filter to a K&N. I have removed the secondary muffler and gone to a straight pipe.

I mention these things in case they could trigger the light. Can they?

I have ordered an O2 sensor as stated in another thread.

NOW to the point....how do I use the "gas pedal method" to get the code. Once I get the code where can I find what it means.

Thanks in advance for the help as I have only owned this car for several months and I am need all the help I can get working out the bugs.

Brian

My initial reaction, since I see a K&N install immediately prior to CEL, is perhaps an over oiled K&N causing a MAF failure.

I just found a great link using the search option. Bill Wagner

I did get a code 1131which translates to "knock sensor I".

Any advice on what I need to do next?

Brian,
Reseat the connector for the knock sensor, and see if the error goes away (I had the issue a while ago, and it seems this has cured a number of peoples knock sensor errors). I've got a board to run with Doug's Scantool software if you might like to borrow (you'll need a laptop with a serial port though).

Eric thanks and I will let you know.

I have reseated them and I took the car out for a short hard ride up to 6200 and no light yet.

I checked for codes using the gas pedal method and the code came up 1231 for an change to intermediate.

I have removed the connections and cleaned them so hopefully this problem will go to rest.
