Default PMO carbs versus Motec?

Has anybody ever fitted PMO carbs to their 964 RS or a 3.6 engined C2/C4?

The carbs seem to be cheaper than having Motec fitted and must add a lot to the induction noise and look great?

I have read about C2 engines producing 319 bhp with PMO (or Webers) with a mild cam and equal length headers. Anybody have a view or experience of them.

Positives and negatives etc?

Unless you a building a car for a specific race class that prohibits EFI, I would never carb a 964.

There are downsides to the drivability of carbs but they offer quite a bit performance for the money. You see a lot of carbed 3.6's around. I'll agree with Colin that FI is more desirable.

...........stay with EFI as the carbs do make it more of a weekend versus daily car. I have owned some PMO's and they are simply fantastic, however, I would not want them on a car that I want to just hop in and drive on a daily or weekly basis without worrying about warm up etc. Go with the Motec.

How about carbs and a magneto with column ignition timing shift ? Woops , I was thinking about a 1920s Bentley !!
Life has moved on from the carb ??at least I hope so.

No offence meant , just an old guys amusement !!

i bet properly set -up carbs would be way better than the motronic....especially at part throttle. the mileage would suck but the drivability would be way better

I thought one of the benefits of injection vs carbs was driveability?

there was a RS America around here fitted with PMO's (46mm, i believe)
this car was set up purely for Auto-x. Greg Fordhal at Fordhal MS set this us - you could give him a call if you are curious. He also does MoTeC around here, along with Chris's.

Simon,
Not quite ! It just amazes me that anyone with a motor that has a proper
management system even thinks about carbs . I have set up lots of side and down draft car setups . The magic word is compromise .
There is this " I can do that " appeal which keeps these things going .
Given a proper Motronic system , a down draught system can be done . I have done some for people who are convinced that on a road spec motor, lots of extra allsorts will happen.
Its their money but I wouldnt waste mine !!
All the best down under in the land of the roo !!

Geoff
