Default Poll: Interest in reproduction 964 rear tail light lenses.

I may, *may* have the opportunity to have some reproduction rear tail light lenses made in bulk. If so, they would look OEM on most all accounts, & might even last longer than the POS OEM units! I'm on my 3rd set now, looking for a fourth.

I am curious to see who might be interested & at what prices. Current Porsche Dealership pricing is: $265.57 retail for the sides (each), $402.81 retail for the middle unit: $933.95. If you're lucky, your dealership may offer you a 10% discount: $840.56 + tax, so you're still about $900 after taxes: ouch!! Online prices don't show too much of a change...

So, If my source could muster 100 sets or so, at what price would people be MOST interested in purchasing them??

$650-750 range (well, it's better than OEM Pricing, I'll consider it)
$550-650 range (now you're talking! maybe next month I'll buy them)
$450-550 range (wow, I'll buy a set now!)
$<under $450: OMG: How fast can I pay you??

Thanks for answering, Mark

Can they make them as red as the current ones?
Sounds interesting.

The lower end of your price range would be about right. Reproduction lenses tend to have less than expected fit and optics with half the cost, not that the OEM units have any long lasting quality. My experience is with typical collision related replacement lenses, any reproduction would be worth a look if they can be retailed for half of OEM. I would be interested as would another local 964 owner.

Mine are still holding up. I don't park in the sun if I can avoid it.

Do you know what type of resin they will be made from? If this is backyard reproduction casting (based on the price point and volume) using a prototyping resin such as PX521 or alumilite then don't bother. They won't hold up long term and the whole project will turn into a nightmare for you two years down the road.
If you're going with molds from Asia then nevermind.

I've toyed around with the idea of casting (i already have the vacuum & pressure equipment) the front foglights but the long term durability issues and the numbers just don't work out, not yet at least.

I, personally would not be making these: I have a connection through a company who makes lenses for many manufacturers, so no, it would not be a backyard attempt.

I have also thought of doing some tail lights but the dot approval holds me back . Selling non approved ones could be a legal nightmare , so , the idea of making a couple of bucks by exposing myself to suits , kinda kills all the fun .

Perhaps it would be possible to have a disclaimer that states "for off road use only", like on a lot of other track oriented parts. Then its not the sellers fault if someone decided to go against their statement and drove it on public roads against the seller's recommendation.... Of course, I'm sure that in today's legal environment, that still may not protect the seller.

If its not bullet proof and someone sues , cause this that or the other , one suit would kill all the profits and me .

If they are red...and I mean proper red, I'll take a pair.

BTW, Who is suing who for what?....what damages do you forsee. Think the NHTSA is going to track you down or are you talking an end user suing for, what?...lens faded, cracked or he is now in a wheel chair because the lenses were not bright enough to keep the old lady from rear-ending him at a stop; or worse yet, the lenses were too light rendering the handling of the car diabolical and caused the driver to crash...come on people...you making 100 pairs or 5,000 pairs of these?

I would definitely buy a set (mmmh how much to post to UK). Make sure they're properly red, not that pink nonsense
