Default Wheel identification & tyre choice

I wonder if anyone can help with a spot of wheel identification?

I have 17" cup 2 wheels on my '91 C4 - the fronts are 7J and the rears are 8J.
Whilst I'm comfortable with the 55 offset on the fronts, the rears are 30 offset. I've trawled the archives here but can't find any reference to such a wheel. Does anyone have an idea as to what they may be from originally?

As a second point - I'm about to replace tyres all round and go for 205s on the front but am unclear as to whether I'll get 255s on the rear 8" rims - I've seen one post saying that OEM tyres for 8J 17" wheels were indeed 255s and another post saying don't go bigger than 245s!! Commercial wheel/tyre sites also appear to give conflicting info. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

David

As for wheels, are they factory wheels? If yes, they will have part numbers listed on them.

As for the tires, yes, you can run 255/40x17's. I've been running that size combo for 15 years. They are the recommended size for the RS America which had 8J 17 wheels. Ref: http://www.rsamerica.net/whatis.htm

Hi David, I have the answer to your question, just browsed through the German Porsche Owners Forum, I'll give you a short translation in case your german isn't that good Still attached the original in winword format for reference and photos.

The article states that exactly the size of rim you are asking for the rear fits with no problems to NON-LOWERED 964s (european ride hight), it actually looks perfect as seen on the picture, this guy using it on a speedster. With LOWERED suspension, it depends on the wheel manufacturer if it touches the fender (do not use wheels with these rim-protecting-protusions). In worst case the fender has to be reworked. (now I'm missing the right term here..)

It also answeres your second question: 255 tires will fit, although it's the maximum to go on an 8" rim.

BTW, the 30mm offset wheel was originally delivered with the 964 Jubilee, thats the wide-body model "30 Years 911"

Thanks both for your comments - much appreciated.
Without wishing to disagree with you Blackmoney911 re: the origin of the 30 mm offset wheels can I ask though where you got your info re: the Jubilee wheel size as I have a colleague with one of these and he has 9J 17" rear wheels but with 55 offset!!

Regards,

David

Hi David, on the german Porsche Owners Site there's a forum just for Jubilees. These guys are dedicated I can tell you! In short theres differences btw. the original limited 911 pieces and many other WTL (Werks Turbo Look) with 2WD and even many copies from C4s WTL with differencies in the axles. Shouldn't make you any headache, here's the link if you wish to look it up anyway
