I am new to the Rennlist game, but not so new to the Porsche game. I have recently moved from the old to the newer ('66 911 to '89 c4). Love the transition, but need more input. Do you have any diagnostic tools left, that you would part with?

Sorry Idl311, all have been spoken for.

Welcome to Rennlist, a truly good place, and nice to know you picked the right model!
No doubt very soon you will harassed by other Rennlisters for the obligatory photos.

Default Diag tool arrived!

Hello Nick,

The Diagnostics tool arrived today. Thanks so much for your efforts. Looks fantastic and I can't wait to play with it. My car is a 964 Euro Cup, so I'm hoping (and have been led to believe) that most of the diagnostics are stock 964. Hope so. No matter, the tool will get used by myself and friends with 964's.

I'll be in touch and again thanks, I appreciate your handi-work.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks Nick, got mine earlier this week. US postal delivered it in the middle of the rare Ice storm we just had here. I was impressed with that. Also quite impressed with the diagnostic tool. Can't wait to play with it. Endorsement: Even my wife was impressed with it's appearance and she's not impressed with ANYTHING to do with my car!

Glad it arrived safely, despite the bad weather. Sounds like you need to let your wife drive the car for a while.......

The Cup car DME is almost standard !! Not as exciting as the name suggests .
Diagnostics will be fine.

Got my tool today, thanks Nick! Only six days from NZ to UK wow....

As Nick'ss probably asleep at the moment can anyone else answer this?

My laptop doesn't have a 9 -pin serial port. Can I safely use either a USB-Serial adaptor or a PCMCIA-Serial adaptor? I'm not sure if months ago I read of problems using these leads?? Damaged Laptop interfaces?

Any ideas? I want to play....

Gary, you can use a PCMCIA-Serial adapter - the USB ones generally don't support the righ baud rate to talk to the Motronic. I got this one from Maplin which works fine.

cheers

GaryC2UK, you have mail.

IanR, thanks for the link and the answer.

The Motronic unit talks at 8800 Baud and USB much prefers 9600 and up. The old serial ports cope well with the odd baud rate.

But if you don't have a serial port then you will need either a PCMCIA serial card or a USB to serial converter. The only USB/serial converter i have heard of that works is one made by SIIG and uses the FT8U232AM chip. I havn't tried either option, i figured it was just as easy to buy an old laptop!

Cheers,
Nick

Default Data collection..........?

It seems as though pretty much everyone has their diagnostic tool now. Most of you will have had a little play……..and then thought “What does that mean?”

What I would like to do is build a database of the Actual Values and ECU Inputs etc shown by the tool from everyone and anyone who has the diagnostic tool.

By collecting and collating this information we might learn something about our cars and hopefully it will give us some idea of the “normal” parameters the car should be within.

If this seems like a useful idea please just email me with “Porsche data” in the subject heading and I will put together a standard form in the next week or two and reply with it attached. Once you have recorded the info, email it back to me, I’ll try and put it together into something useful and probably post it on Rennlist.

Cheers,
Nick
