Question Wiper Speed

I find that the speed of my wipers is very fast. This sounds a bit silly, but is that normal? It's as if the wipers are set on what would be a "Fast" sweep in another car.

I have a 91 C4 and my wiper has three speeds plus an intermittant which is timed via a **** on the dash.

I'm talking about the "Low speed wiping" position on the steering column lever: it runs very fast.

There are 3 other positions: "Medium", "Fast" and "Intermittent", the last of which is controlled by the **** on the dash.

I don't think that **** should have any effect on the "Low" position.

Thank you all. I bought my 964 last year and I too was wondering the same about my wiper speed. I was stunned to read above about checking the wiper control ****...What ****, I said to myself? OMG, yep, there it is and thank you Julian for asking the question. Oh, no need to tell me the engine is in the rear, I figured this out myself.

Hi Ron,

So do your wipers run fast when in the "Slow" position? The dash rheostat **** has no effect on the speed my wipers run at in "Slow" ... my understanding is that that **** is only used for the "Intermittent" sweep.

Frankly I'm a bit nervous about trying the "Medium" and "Fast" settings: I have visions of the arms detaching themselves and impaling a pedestrian!

Hi Julian,

Ok,here is a very unscientific test on the speed of my wiper in low, medium, and high settings. In ten seconds I counted the number of sweeps the wiper made to the left and one to the right (so a count of 2 sweeps means it went once to the left and once to the right). At the low setting, it made 7 sweeps, medium is 8 sweeps and high is 10 sweeps. Now, it isn't exaxtly right on 7, 8 or 10 but close enough.

The test was done with th engine off and on the highest setting, the wiper motor was very loud and made a whining sound like it was straining. I never used it before.

Hope this helps.

Nice looking 964 and you have some great info out there. I bookmarked it and will be back shortly to read more about the low-cost hammer alternative.
