Default Sold my 996..Looking for a 964

Hello all,

I'm a newb to the air cooled scene...I tried a search for certain years of the 964 to buy but didn't come up with the answers to my questions...

Just 2 questions...which year 964 should I look for...and what are the common problems with certain years of these P-cars?

Any links to help out would be great!

Thanks for the help

search for dual mass flywheel, cylinder head gasket, distribuiter vent. Those are some of the possible problem areas by year

Call Concours Motors in Glendale WI. They had a 92 on Ebay that didn't make reserve last week. Very low miles-29k I think and I believe it can be had for $26,500.

Water cooled to air cooled, it's nice to see someone moving in the right direction.

Hi,

You should be looking as late as possible, the early models had some issues with the cylinder head sealing. Make sure the car is dry under the engine.

Main Changes in 92 models design 92 wheels, aerodynamic miirors, revised pdas/abs unit installed, revised suspenion, flywheel revised and revised power steering rack.

But the most important factor is service history.

Production of the 964 finished December 93. But at the end of the day condition, colour and service history will be the deciding point.

I've looked at this car in person. It would pass for a new one. It's that nice cosmetically. Hildy is right in that it has about 29,000 miles.

The 1989 to 1991 cars have several issues that could come up. Porsche did not use a cylinder to head gasket on these cars and the head to cylinder area can leak. Some cars will never leak, some will only weap just a bit and never any more and some will leak like an Exxon tanker. It's a pretty rare leak however and there is a permanant and reliable fix (machine work and new gasket) that will eliminate this problem from ever re-occuring.

All 964's from 1989 to 1993 need a dual distributor vent kit. $15. However, on any 964 and 993, you should have the dual distributor belt replaced if it has not been replaced in 5 years or 50,000 miles.

The early 964 (except 1989 C4's) had Freudenberg dual mass flywheels that were prone to failure. However, at this age, many of these have been replaced with the more reliable LUK unit.

Other than those issues, the early 964's are just as solid as the late ('92 to '94) cars. I personally wouldn't limit the years to just '92 to '94. There can be some very nice early 964's to be had for reasonable amounts.

Good luck!

Jay
