Something I don't know about my car and don't know how to determine is whether or not I have a LSD. My options sticker is long gone. How do you tell if it's LS. My car will fishtail fairly easy.

there's probably a code somewhere but you can tell when driving...if the inside wheel spins freely in a corner then you don't have it. if both rear wheels sping at the same rate you do.

From experience, there are a fair number out there that are too worn to do the job properly!It's worth checking whether you are meant to have one or not and then see if it is working! Rebuilding the LSD with new plates isn't too expensive and it can make a big difference.

is it normal for the LSD in this car to be a bit graunchy in very tight low-speed turns. Last time I drove a 996 GT3 I could hear and feel the LSD at low speeds but I'm wondering if you're supposed to in a 964.

Can't you just jack up the rear (using the engine) and spin the wheels? AFAIK if both turn in the same direction you have an LSD, if not you don't.

Yes! The noise is, IMO, part of the experience. As I pull out onto the road, it's noise reminds me of driving a race car out of the pits and it still brings a botish grin to my face.

Yes, again, altough I don't think it will tell you if the LSD is knackered!

How many miles are on these cars that have completely worn out LSDs? And on LSDs making noise?

I only get to drive the car once a week or so. my commute is too short to use it every day - it would never heat up properly. So I drive the 650i everyday and don't worry about it;-) no doubt some guy on a bimmer board is going to read that a write a rant about how i'm an idiot for treating a $30K car better than a new B'em.

absolutely! it's why I love the car...it's a MACHINE! you feel the diff, the gears, the road - even the odo clicks forward in deliberate mechanical movements. it's like a fine automatic watch - all metal, gears and springs with no BS!

Varies with use. I have heard of it as little as 30,000 miles and I have known a car with 60,000 miles to still be OK. My car needed the plates replacing at about 50,ooo miles.

Yesterday morning, mine did the same thing. Cold and chilly and the rear end broke loose while I was romping on the throttle while taking a sharp left turn at an intersection. Kept it under control, but I was wondering if I would have been able to control it if the street was wet.

for sure. just don't JUMP out of the throttle. even it out, steer where ya wanna go and look like a hero.

as for mileage...my car has 55,000 miles but you can only hear the LSD as it binds in parking lot 90 degree bends.

Thats interesting.

I've had 3 cars with factory installed ZF LSD transmissions. None made any different noise than open diffs, mileage on those cars ranged from 21k to 97k.

I just rebuilt a 944S2 transmission and swapped in an LSD from a spare 135k mile 944T trans - I disassembled the LSD, the friction discs were fine, and the slip torque was still within the factory spec range.

I believe that the design of the 964 LSDs is the same as the 944 ZF 40% LSDs.
