The Mitutoyo worked fine except for the #3 cylinder exhaust valve and then only because of the pipe merge for the catalytic converter. Obviously (or maybe not so obviously) you can't use the same (length) tip that you would use for setting the cam-timing.

Jason,

I have an inline indicator similar to what you picture (though dimensionally I have no idea) and I wasnt able to do anything with it on the intake valves. I didnt put a lot of effort into it as I pulled out my back plunger quickly after so thats why I say I wasn't 100% sure.

All indicators are not created the same, though, and nor are the operators.

If you do yours again anytime soon would you mind snapping a picture of how you orient your setup? I can hardly see my back plunger one and yours would most likely provide better visibility.

p.s. Sorry for having doubted you. Generally I go with my own experiences, but in some cases, especially yours, I know better and should defer.

I just checked my hard drives and I can't believe I never took any photos documenting a valve adjustment inprocess. I have a gazillion shots of the rockers, valves, camshafts, valve covers but nothing showing the dial-indicator. The next time around I will definitely take some photos.

There is no harm in asking anyone to backup what they are saying with proof of some sort. If more people did so it would probably save everyone a lot of wasted time chasing around what someone thought they remembered.
