Default Preventative Maintainance!

Time to pick the brains of the best Porsche minds on the internet..............

I am going to be taking my 964RS RHD ROW spec car to Australia. Here in the UK, I use a top rate outfit to look after my car and, while I am sure there must be good people in Sydney, I am getting my car serviced and fettled for one last time here in the UK as I then know I will have done all I can to ensure that I won't need to spend my first few months looking for the right specialist.

I am going to do a certain amount of preventative stuff. For instance, the distrubutor belts will be changed as I can find no record of that having been done. Other than normal service items, what else would people consider getting done?

I've posted a copy of the recommended maintenance schedule in this thread. You might find some useful info there.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave

That is helpful and it seems that except for the dizzie belts, everything else has been done. However, I was trying to think "outside the box". I did consider getting the clutch done, as the car has done nearly 50k miles on the current one (if the documents are correct) but its still as strong as anything and if the clutch begins to go, I would be happy for an OPC to do that.

So, what else goes with no warning, that is sensible to do something about.

If you're looking to change things that aren't broken, I've noticed lately folks needing:
  • Ignition coils
  • Ignition wires
  • Alternator bearings
  • Power steering pump seals

Simon, as the car is 12+ years old I would also look at any brake/hydraulic fluid lines........

Reason for that remark is I had a brake pipe failure on an MOT with my same year old Audi......It frightened the life out of me, seeing the way brake pipes baloon under normal brake pressures, needless to say all of my lines on both the Audi and 964 have now been replaced, now it may not happen to you, or anyone else.....but.........
If you did these I'd be inclined to replace the slave cyl, these have a tendancy to go unnoticed when the brakes are bled.....leaves a nasty residue to eventualy destroy the seals.

Kevin.

Depending on when was the last time you changed them I would add:

All belts
All the small oil hoses under the rear fender (close to the oil tank)
RS... you do not have power steering, correct? If you do then I suggest replacing the rubber hoses for the power steering (source of leaks)
DME Relay

warmfuzzies mentioned the brake rubber lines, and replacing the clutch slave cylinder with its hose. And a complete brake fluid change.

The usual stuff (oil, air and oil filter)

Inspect brake pads and rotors

50K miles... clutch change... depends on how hard you are on it... should last many more miles. But if you decide to change it make sure you get the updated clutch fork and other updated parts.

Shortly after I got my car, I had all the things listed here done as preventative maintenance.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will be getting my specialist to check on some of the items mentioned, although, fortunately, many of them were replaced by the PO.

You could replace some of the grounds, particularily the transmission ground strap.
