Default Okay, I'm really stuck! . . . need help

I can't seem to get the power steering housing away from the cam shaft enough to replace the o-ring on the back side.

In the picture below you can see the purple lower spring coil, then a black hard oil line, then a bolt hole/ear on the power steering pump housing.

This "ear" is blocked by the hard oil line. The oil line attaches directly to the engine case and I'm reluctant to try and crack the nut because I don't have any idea if it a) will come free without damage and b) has any sort of seal that will then need replacing (which I, obviously don't have).

I'm trying to get the pump housing out enough to replace the o-ring seal on the back side (see second picture).

Any advice?

I'll even take sympathy at this point!

Cheers,
Dave

Here's a better picture of the hard oil line (thanks to KirkF). It's the J-pipe on the rhs next to the engine mount. You can even see the bottom side of the power steering pump housing to the lower right.

There's no seal to replace on that hard oil line; if you have a wrench to loosen it slightly it will help to rotate it away. It is also slightly flexible so you can squeak the piece past it with a little finesse..

It's off.

When all else fails, ask your wife!

No so much a puzzle as a battle. Whew. I think that hard line is mounted just a bit too far aft.

I've got the o-ring mounted and am ready to mount the seal. It seems from the threads that mounting the housing first is the best approach. That's what I'm going to do.

Just wanted to post an update.

Thanks for the input.

Cheers,
Dave

I'm in the middle of doing the same thing and it isn't pleasant. I was able to get my pulley off by rotating the engine to top dead center and just using a breaker bar. The engine compression was enough to hold the cam.

There's a bolt in the center of the pulley (#14). Then there are three bolts that hold the housing to the block (#19). I left the pump attached to the housing.

Good luck.

Going back through my pictures I can see that I removed the pump from the bracket at #4 to allow the ***'y to come free of the cam shaft and seal.

I just did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Be careful sliding the pump back on the camshaft. I popped the tension spring out o fhte seal when I put the pump on with the engine out. Leaked like crazy... so I had to redo it with the engine in. Just lubricate the seal well and try to keep it aligned when you slide it on.

I removed my pulley by putting a piece of metal in between the spokes and using the pump housing to stop it from rotating. Takes a little to find a rib to bump up against, and 3 hands. I think everything under this car takes 3 hands.
