RUF 18" SPEEDLINES - TOO BIG FOR A 964 C2?
Hello to all on the forum,
I have been reading these forums for a couple of years, but never really had much to say!!!! See my car in the 964 pics thread. Speak soon.
Now I have a question -
I bought my car in February (’93 964 C2 – now running 300bhp + original shocks, but lowering springs) with Ruf 18" (10 and 8.5 inch wide) Speedlines already on the car. Not sure how long they had been on the car before I bought them.
I recently bought two new rear tyres and often the tyre rubs on the right rear arch (this had never happened with the old tyres).
My car is being serviced at the moment (by a reputable indie) and I asked them to look into the rubbing - They have said that the wheels are too big for the car and this has led to very uneven wear on the front wheels – almost bald on the inside and 4mm or tread left on the outside of both wheels. They have also said that there is now little adjustment in the suspension to correct this and that the best thing is too is to go back to 16/17 inch wheels. They also said that the car would perform better on smaller wheels.
I like the 18 Ruf’s and I was looking into refurbing them until I found out this news
Does anyone else run 18” wheels on an almost standard 964 C2?
Did the 964 cup have 18” wheels?
Any other suggestions other than replacing the wheels?
How do people sit on the argument for better performance from the smaller wheels?
Any other views?
Thanks,
Tom

They overlooked one thing...........some tires have a square shoulder, whereas other have a rounded one............chances are you put on tires with the square shoulder, thus the rubbing.....as you indicated the problem did not exist before the tire swap.
Now the next question, are the tires you recently installed the same brand, model and build date as the ones you removed ?
I just had a RUF car in my shop....same problem, but not because it is a RUF.....I would suggest you raise the suspenion as much as you can first before you spend anymore money.

I was at Ruf Dallas this week and rode in Wayne's 89 C4 RCT with 18's on it. It sits very low and only rubs the front just like my car does with 17" Kinesis. Should not cause uneven tire wear as that is an alignment issue IMHO. Any big wheel and lowered car will rub some is my experience but I am not going to raise my car because of it, but mine is very minor?

I used to run Bridgestone SO2's (no rubbing) and due to unavailablity went to Pirelli P-Zeros which rubbed. Now back on SO2's - no rubbing.
I'm a true believer that tyre choice has a big part to play in the 'rubbing' issue.

I've got Ruf 18's on mine...the new style. If you run 235s in front...they will rub...but only inside wheel well...so I run 225s. Also, I upgraded front hubs to 993EVO hubs so I will not have any hub failure issues that can be caused by running an 18 on a hub not designed for it. These also take out the bump steer isses you get w/lowering the car.

PS. I'm also quite interested in 18" wheel issues, my '90 has the stock 16's

This has been covered many times before. It depends on the offsets etc. of the RUF (or any make) wheels. I have 8.5 and 10 inch wheels with no rubbing as far as I can see, but they were a tight fit! I use SO2's.
