Default Shift Lever Movement - Problem????

I recently noticed that my gear shift lever can be moved up nad down by abou 1/2" to 3/4". By up and down I don't mean forward and backward in the normal shift pattern, but upward toward the roof of the car. So far it has not interferred with the normal motion of shifting gears although it does seem a little loose now that I am aware of it. Basic question - is this normal??? Would some one please check their car to see if I have a problem to correct, and let me know if I have an impending disaster.

If I remember correctly, there was a recent post where someone had done a great job of removing the boot and fixing bushings and other odd bits at the base of the shifter. The post had included some well detailed pics. I'm guessing I have a similar problem, but have been unable to locate the post. Any help would be appreciated.

Game plan is to replace a worn shift boot and **** and to clean up whatever is beneath. I have Howard's post on removing the boot but the pictures do not open. Any other source of info on removing the leathe boot from the console?
