Importing 964 to Australia or NZ
Hi,
I have a '91 964.
Anyone know the process of importing this car to OZ? What taxes need to be paid?
Do they judge the car on when first reg or manufactured?
Cheers
Derek

Three Wheelin'
One of the guys from Titanic moved from the UK to Oz about a year ago and took his 964 Cab with him. I'll e-mail him and see if I can get him to pop over here and offer his experience.

we work on these cars everyday, i would personally stay away from grey imports. i would say that 95% of imports we see are terribly neglected. not to say you wont find a good one. and as i said resale is poor.

car import into Australia
I did this and its lot of time & paperwork. The cost was AUD $15-16,000 by the time car was registered and fully insured ready to drive away (join the local Porsche club) for the insurance best rates. You will also need to fit locally the correct & approved alarm that will comply with the insurance company with proof of installation eitherwise no insurance. I thought my freight forwarder was the best and they were ****e. Make sure you choose them wisely.
Firstly you need the right to import granted by Dotars in Canberra before you can do anything, this take about 3 months. The information changes so you must check their site for the latest rules and regulations.
They will need to know everything....
1) When you bought the car (with receipts)
2) Must be owned over 12 months
3) Proof you’re an expat- ie lease, telephone bills etc with local address
Then you need to fumigate the container before it leaves the port, I didn't & it cost another $2000 extra as NOBODY TOLD ME so Quarantine did it again when the car arrived and damaged the paintwork (another $5,000) which I claimed on my insurance. TIP Get insurance just in case)
You will pay duty (based on their valuation) and VAT.
Then depending on the state of import, the car needs to go to an approved local garage to get the engineering certificate before it can registered, they will rip you off because they can and will find things wrong just to get the work, make sure the car is in A1 condition before it leaves.
NOTE- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LAP SASH SEAT BELTS FRONT & REAR + THE LATEST VERSION OF CHILD RESTRAINTS ALREADY FITTED. I knew this and had them fitted before the car left, this will save you up to $5000 extra, as they will charge you that much to install them- absolute rip off so be warned.
I love the car, great to drive back at home so do it the right way and you will be OK.
Good luck, Mark

Import in Australia
Targa should be OK, just make sure you have the lap sah belts in the back seats and the 2 Child restraint hooks fittted. You can buy the Child restraint hooks & bolts in Australia for about AUD$30 per pair, the bolt holes are alteady factory fitted in the rear parcel shelf so you just need to install the plastic covers that you can also buy from an Australain Porsche dealer for about AUD$3.00 per pair.
