In fact, since I have the car (nearly 4 years) the A/C never functionned to my satisfaction. The compressor seems to work, the clutch too, but the system is not capable to provide cool air as the system in my VW does.
I have had the system converted to r134, but, even after, the air was not really cool, especially on hot days.
Apparently, one of the hoses coming out of the compressor should be ice cold when the A/C is in operation, the other hot. I have one hot and one medium cold.
Which temperature should the air have when it comes out of the system?
The system is probably low on gas. Get it leaktested and refilled. Worst case scenario is that the evaporator has sprung a leak, which is not uncommon in 964's.
I just went for a ride, outside temp. is around 25C/80F; the system provides acceptable cool air. But with the outside temp. of around 32C/95F we had the last days, no chance to cool the car down when it stood in the sun.
I guess I have a working A/C system, but which is not very powerful. Has anyone experience with improving airflow from the evaporator to the vents?
When its 95 here and the car has set in the sun it takes a long time to cool off. Mine is a cab so dont know if that makes a difference. It will still cool enough to be comfortable. It doesnt do much at all if in stop and go traffic.
EDIT: Mine had been converted to R134 before I bought it so dont know if that made any difference on cooling.
I just wondered whether performance of these systems is generally poor or whether mine is particularly bad.
It certainly doesn't help that my treasure is black/black.
Anyway, when I sit in the Golf (Rabbit in the US I guess), the air coming out of the vent is cool 5 seconds after pressing the switch, even if the car stood in the sun. That is what I would like to have in the 964!
I just bought a new receiver/dryer for mine... I think I have the original in there.
Phil... I'm in the same boat... I haven't converted yet... I still have a case of the old R12 that I plan to use in mine. I bought a vacuum pump and gauges.
<Stupid Question> Does anyone know if the factory manuals show how to charge the system properly? (I haven't had time to look) If not... Is there a website that shows how to do it? I checked in a few places and didn't find anything.
... the factory manuals show how to charge the system properly? ...
There are several pages devoted to the a/c system. Volume 6, 87-20 and ff.
pknlux: I too have a black/black car. The a/c is adequate to maintain cool if the car is reasonably cool to begin with. In my car, cooling down after sitting in the sun takes about twice as long as a "normal" a/c system, but then it will maintain a comfortable (never cold) interior, even on a 95F day. So - park in the shade if you can, and always use a windscreen sunshade so the system has a chance!
I have to disagree with the pessimists. My 89 C4 required 3 shop vists and too many dollars after having a dealer do the upgrade. After the last shop, the one that really, REALLY tries to fix things the right way (even if it takes a week) got done, the system is cold. And that's cold enough to cool the car down in Houston summer after sitting in the sun. The trick seems to be finding ALL the leaks so the system can maintain a high pressure charge.

I would disagree. I know someone who replaced their compressor in their 964 and it is ice cold when an outside temp of 90 F and 55% humidity. I think our compressors are getting tires, etc.
These cars aren't like the old 911's - they have a much improved system.
So, this leads to another question: How can we fit a honda/generic compressor on our brackets? : )
I just had mine converted to R134 because my original compressor was beginning to spray oil. It cools ok and is comfortable even in Florida.
ONE issue is the noise mine makes, even brand new the compressor noise in the cabin is very noticeable . Anyone else have a compressor that makes a good amount of noise in the cab?
I was having poor A/C cooling on a R134 conversion done by the PO. With temps rising I took it into the shop for a leak test and recharge. The pressures and volumes were just fine with no leaks. All electronics were checked and found to be in order. What next? The reccomendation was to convert back to R12 and replace the expansion valve and dryer. I reluctantly agreed.
Im happy to report Im now getting a 50+ F change in temp from outside air. I picked up the car today with temps around 104 F and the temp gauge stuck in the vent was reading 53 F at idle and dropped to 46 F once we drove around the block. It was the coolest drive in months. I hope it stays that way.
BTW, Adrians book talks about replacing the expansion valve and dryer on a car blowing warm air - page 468. That apparently worked in my case combined with converting back to R12.
