From: Philly Area ----- George Washington took a dump in my backyard!
Just put on a set of 16" Toyo T-1R's as a replacement of MPS. Heading to Watkins Glen tomorrow for 3 days of DE.
I chose the T-1R's for the reason that I am driving to the Glen, where I want a decent rain tire. I didn't want the RA-1 for the street, and my ability isn't up to the characteristics of a R - compound (Larry Herman gave me the perfect explaination of street vs. R compound at the DE Tech).
I used the NT01 as an alternative to the Toyo RA1's and Kumho Victoracers. I think that the Nitto NT01 is about 1 second slower per 60sec Autocross lap. The difference is not as noticeable on a Big Track.
I won't buy the NT01 again for the following reasons: not all sizes are available, they are slower, the rubber compound is similar but harder than RA1's and cost more. It was fine to cover the time cap with Toyo's availability problems and I will use/finish my current set as practice tires.
Martin,
Thanks for the info. I was disappointed to hear that the compound is harder than the RA-1s. I'd heard previously that the compound is the same as the RA-1s. I may end up calling Nitto.
Patrick
FWIW - I gotten a little more info from a Nitto NA staff engineer who told me that the compounds are not identitical but are very similar between the NT-01 and the RA1s. He said that the wear, heat cycle and adhesion characteristics are very similar but that he's getting feedback from racers that the NT-01s are consistently faster. NT-01s need to get to 160F for max grip.
I just wrote back and asked why he thought the NT-01s are quicker but haven't heard his response. I friend in a 928 thinks the're quicker.
I think that I'm just going to have to try the NT01s for myself and be my own judge on how I like them...
..what may seem bad for one person is great for another (at least that seems to be very true for r-compounds I've found... some people swear by MPSCs and others hate them)
Same here for next year. I won't have a fair comparison though as I intend to go from MPSCs 225f 255r to NT-01 245f and 275r
Why? Faster is faster, and if those are the only sizes that you can get in MPSCs and the Nittos fit, well......

I would recommend to get a set of shaved to 4/32 Toyo RA1's, you will be fast and happy with them. They are very consident thru the entire run session (short or long) and all the way to the end of life of the tire. They are not sensitive to tire pressure as long as you run them ~ 40 psi hot.
For my application (Time Trial, DE and Autocross) I think it is the best DOT R-Compound tires with a "Treadwear 100". 2nd best would be the Kumho Vitcoracer, 3rd the NT01 and then MPSC. IMO
